Your History -
Oldest of two children Mai was born in April 1st to a computer specialist and systems engineer, and a merchant in Osiris. Mai was loved but more than that she was her parents way into the Osiris' society. Mai's parents wanted the Choi family to be known, to be admired and they believed they had a daughter that could help them achieve that.
Mai had two dreams growing up to travel to other planets, explore the black and to become a computer expert like her father. She loved technology and her father indulged her teaching code and how to build a system from scratch. Mai seemed to have a natural talent to hack into computer systems, the cortex and explore the fragility of certain computer networks, but these were childish games, her family had a different plan for her.
She wasn't free to choose her own destiny and just a couple weeks after her tenth birthday, Mai was sent to Sihnon to live with an aunt who had connections within the Guild. Mai never dreamed about becoming a Companion; she had a soft spot for adventure and the innocent curiosity to experiment new things. She read old tales about pirates in the Earth that was and she lost herself in fantasies of a life of danger and excitement. A life that her sheltered existence in Osiris and Sihnon never allowed her to experience. But it was Mai's parents' wish that she attended the training house and became a companion. She accepted their decision, Mai had to. She was a good daughter and that was what good daughters did in the Core Worlds.
Mai began her training at Master House in Sihnon early in life, at age of eleven. Her tutor was Emma Luther, a house High Priestess who saw future in the young girl. Mai had left her home, a prison of good manners and arrogance for the Academy where little had changed. She was introduced to new ideas and learned new skills at the training house, that was true but she never felt complete there which was the reason she tried so hard to excel. She trained extensively for many years and exceeded all expectations, she was hoping success would bring her some fulfillment, but it never did. She never learned to love her the craft she had mastered.
She began practicing her craft in Sihnon but eventually relocated to Ariel where she planned to establish herself, but Mai didn't have in her to be the submissive person the Guild wanted her to be. She lacked that skill and during the first meeting with a booked client she hacked the man's security system and locked him inside one room for hours while she helped herself around his house. Mai knew that after that she couldn't go home. Her family would be ashamed and the Guild would revoke her license. She booked a place in a ship to the Rim, turning her back to her family and the Guild. Mai never regretted that decision.
She severed her ties with the Guild but that cost her family the status they loved so much. Out of guilt, Mai sent them credits and made sure they had everything they needed...other than social status. Her father never answered her waves and the credits were not touched. She stopped contacting them. The war came and the war ended and Mai survived pulling jobs and tricking people.
Mai became a grifter, a con artist. She had all the Companion training, she was technologically savvy and she had a talent to misbehave. She joined a crew out of Persephone and pulled many jobs with them. Some worked, others not to much. She created fake identities to herself and married men to steal from them. Lying was a second nature to Mai. It was natural, like breathing. She did what was necessary to survive and she had fun because that was all Mai ever wanted for her life, to have fun.
Under the name Wong Li, she was arrested by the Alliance and sent to a Federal prison to wait trial for crimes against the Alliance (and against one of her exes who worked for the Alliance). She spent four months behind bars until the prison warden was informed of an identity mistake. The woman they had arrested was Zhang Mai, a nun from Verbena and not this Wong Li person. She was released and escorted back to Persephone. Mai had a crime lord to thank for that. She didn't like owing anything to anyone but now she did and one day she would need to pay.
Right now, Mai is looking for a new ship to call home and a new crew to work with.

Decker. Gorram James Decker.
Mai hadn't heard that name in years. James had left Sinhon to study in Osiris and later on she learned he had joined the Alliance forces. She honestly thought he was dead but apparently he was back from the dead to haunt her. Mai had loved him; a child's love since she was only 10 when she met him but he had been her first love. His parents didn't approve he even talked to her. They knew she was been prepped to join the Master House and begin her training and it was forbidden for some reason. She was just a child but that didn't seem to matter and James gave in to his parents' pressure like she had done when she accepted her fate. He began to ignore her. The sensation of meaning so little to someone that they could easily write her out of their lives marked Mai deeply. They reconnected a few years later when he tried to book her but she had the power to ignore him then and she did.
Typing a few commands in the console, Mai transferred the wave to her bunk and she exited the bridge mouthing an excuse me to the captain. She went down the small set of steps leading to the corridor and stood outside her bunk hatch for a moment. Mai drew in a deep breath, pushed the hatch open and climbed down. She checked her reflection in the mirror instinctively and then frowned at herself. Why would matter if she looked good or not when speaking to him? He no longer mattered.
Mai sat on her bed's edge and hit the cortex terminator to open the wave. Her heart skipped a beat when his face showed onscreen. The years hadn't been nice to him. He looked older than he should have. James was only a couple years older than her after all.
"Mai Ling," his voice hadn't change one bit, though. He smiled and looked genuinely happy to see her. "How wonderful is to see you again." He sounded so honest that Mai almost felt bad for wishing not to accepted his wave.
"James it's..." she began with a small and common smile. "It's been a long time. I see you are well," she tried to sound as nice as possible.
"You are too kind," he replied, finding her strangely kind. "Kinder than I expected. I must confess."
"Well, I'm a grown woman now," she shot back, her temper already showing a life of its own. Mai bit her lower lip lightly.
"And a beautiful one," he stated and Mai had to divert her eyes from the screen for a second.
"What do you want James?" she asked then, all the kindness fading away. "I haven't heard or seen you in over six or seven years. Why are you contacting me now? And how did you find me?"
"That's the Mai I remembered," Lucas remarked with humor. He regretted giving in to his family's requests but he was a child then and she was a child. He lost a friendship. He had made choices after that, all the good and bad ones. There was no need to dwell in the past now. "How I found you is irrelevant. You have your friends and I have mine. They helped me located you."
"For what purposes?" Mai asked, one brow raised. "I'm not a companion anymore and I'm way out of your league now."
James chuckled. "It's not that my dear." he shook his head and his face became more sober. "I have a friend in Persephone who has access to some Alliance classified waves and it seems the Alliance is very interested in that ship you are in. When your name popped as a member of the crew I thought I could give you a heads up. You should be careful."
"Thank you," Mai wasn't convinced of the selflessness behind his action but the warning was welcome anyway. She could always check the Cortex and try to rewrite the information to keep the Alliance out of their tracks. "I appreciate the warning."
"Good," he said with a nod and a small. "It's good to see you well, Mai."
"You too, James."
"Where are you heading?" he asked casually, making conversation.
"Santo," Mai said quickly. "I need to go now," she added, hoping to finally end the conversation.
"I'll leave you be then," he commented. "Good luck my friend. I hope we meet again soon."
"Good bye, James." Mai shut the cortex terminal off and turned startled when she felt a hand on her shoulder. "Gwai-gwai long duh dong!" she turned startled to find the captain standing behind her. "You scared me!"
"Sorry," he said and sat beside her on the bed. "You seemed concerned and I thought I should check to see you were okay."
"It was a weird conversation," she mused, biting her lower lip. She looked at the captain. "I haven't spoken to him in years. Why wave me now"? Mai wasn't actually asking the captain that just talking out loud the things bothering her. "He said the Alliance was interested in this ship but there's something more to this story I can't put my finger on it."
"That's why you lied?" the captain asked. "You said we were heading to Santo and I know for sure we are not."
Mai smiled. "I didn't want to risk it," she shrugged. "I sounded convincing, uh?"
"As always." The captain's compliment made her smile broaden. He was just as good liar as she was. He stood up to leave the bunk. Mai's eyes lingered at the monitor as if she was replaying the message in her head. Why was he hiding from her? Mai was intrigued and that often mean trouble ahead.
