Overall Personality - Henry is a strong leader and has more honor than most you’d find in the business. He’s a mercenary and fights for coin, not country, but he’d never abandon his post or his duty, something you can’t say for every merc. He’s also a man of his word and attempts to act fairly and justly even if his own definitions of what that means varies from that of the typical person at odds with him for he has little sympathy for drunks, addicts, cheats, and gamblers.
Henry can be rather stiff and inflexible. He might engage in idle conversation but would never be the one to start it nor would he allow it when there is work to be done. He’s deadly serious even when the situation isn’t deadly. He likes to do things his way both because he’s a bit stubborn but also because he knows what he’s doing and it’s best others butt out. He’s the type that is always thinking, always optimistic, and always confident that a solution can be found for any problem, perhaps overly so. This contributes to the above belief that he doesn’t need others getting in his way and preventing that solution.
After meeting him, some question why he ever left the military and to be honest he’s not exactly certain it was the right choice. After the war, his life pretty much fell apart for a time. He’s finally fairly happy with himself and is generally content being “the law” in this one little part of the ‘Verse.

Your History - Henry was born to a middle class family on Bernadette in the Core, the eldest of what would eventually be three children. His father worked with the Home office of the Alliance Colony and Settlement Authority, and his mother was a teacher at a small local middle school. Henry was raised by his parents to be a well-mannered gentleman. Some of their lessons rubbed off, others not so much. For the most part, Henry was a good kid (and is still overall a good person) but never exuded kindness, charity , humility or any of the other virtues one might try to instill in a youth. Nor was young Henry particularly a troublemaker, falling into vice, crime, and mischief. He was very much average, a decent student, a decent athlete, a decent friend, and a decent son.
Coming out of school, Henry didn’t really know what he wanted to do so naturally he decided to sign his life away to military service. At 18 he became a marine in the Alliance military, his first real career. Henry liked it well enough and was good at his job. He was no prodigy with hidden talent but he learned and trained to be able to fight with the best of ‘em. Most important though was just the military atmosphere. Henry enjoyed the camaraderie he found in military service, and he was also the type who could take orders well and in time began to enjoy what authority he was given.
While serving, Henry met and fell in love with Simone Ricci, during shore leave on Liann Jiun. Over the next few years, the two saw each other whenever possible and sent messages over the Cortex whenever it wasn’t. The long distance relationship culminated in their marriage and eventually the birth of their first child shortly before hostilities broke out in 2506.
By the time war the war started, Henry was a 24 year old staff sergeant serving aboard the IAV Constellation , a Tohoku class cruiser. After five months and three substantial battles, Miller was transferred to a smaller Longbow class cruiser, the Zhukov, where he would eventually be promoted to gunnery sergeant and aboard which he would serve out the remainder of the war. There he witnessed many battles, including the tragic loss of the Alexander, and participated in over a dozen ship-to-ship boardings and a handful of planetary operations.
Henry mustered out of service a year after the war ended. He’d always enjoyed being a marine and working as part of an occupation force was certainly safer than open warfare, but he decided twelve years of his life was enough to give. Henry returned home to his wife on Liann Jiun and their now six year old son. In all those years he’d never lived at home for more than a few weeks. Rather than improving his marriage, it was actually the end of it. Somehow the relationship survived long distance and war, but not the return of the father. After a few months, Henry left home to work off world. The return to long distance actually did help the marriage stabilize, but clearly a marriage requiring the spouses to be constantly separated was not healthy. After a year, Henry and Simone divorced. Henry sees his ex-wife and his sons (the second being born shortly after the divorce) about as frequently now as he did when in the service.
The job Henry took was based off his homeworld of Bernedetta. His military record and his father’s connections back home helped him get a job supervising a small outpost orbiting close to White Sun. It was part of the Sentry program, an Alliance pseudo-military operation to detect rogue objects moving through space and to prevent potentially catastrophic impacts on inhabited worlds. Henry’s station had its “back” to White Sun and “looked” out on the Core worlds. From there they watched for threats and called them in so the objects could be destroyed or have their trajectories altered.
It was not as cool as it initially sounded. Henry was in command which was nice, but that also meant he had nothing to really do other than administrate. And the station was only a dozen or so guys with only room and amenities for the small crew. It was basically like being in exile. At least a ship went places and the weeks in space were broken by a new and exciting location. Henry sat in that station for three years until finally quitting before he went insane.
For the next two years, Henry worked as an independent transport guard. If someone needed a little extra muscle to protect their goods from theft, pirates, or even mutinous and untrustworthy crews, they hired someone like Henry Miller. Work was inconsistent, but when he did get a job it paid well. Occasionally there’d be some action too, which broke the monotony.
It was during one of his dry spells without work that Henry entered his most recent career. He was contacted by a passenger of one of the ships he’d guarded a few months back. The man wanted him as a permanent guard for this casino ship of his. The pay was slightly better than what Henry was used to and it was more permanent too so the gun-for-hire signed up. Within a few months he was promoted to chief of security for the ship and once again had a command of his own, this one a bit more like his time in service rather than the Sentry station.
Henry has held the position for the past three years and so far has retained the position even after the ship has changed hands and changed names through some sort of insane gamble.

Roleplay Example - A new captain? Well, at least five minutes warning was better than none at all. To call it unexpected would be an understatement. Henry had been aboard ship for three years and now suddenly without warning the ship is in someone else's hands. He'd be lucky if he still had his job come morning. Maybe he wouldn't even want it by then.
That's all the security chief could think of as he left his old captain behind, frantically packing his things in his quarters, and made his way toward the lift down. All he knew about the new man was that he was an incredible fool to take such a horrible wager and incredibly lucky for somehow coming out on top, a much richer man than he started the day. Such an origin story didn't really bode well for financial management of a casino... or anything.
"Here." he spoke gruffly as he exited onto the main deck. He handed a datapad to his man on guard in the hall. "Our new employer. Expect him to arrive shortly." The pad displayed Harwood's basic information and naturally his picture. Whatever Henry thought about the abrupt change or what he feared might be the future of this ship, he was going to do his job. The new boss was to be welcomed as such, not hassled as if he were an unexpected guest.
After a quick stop in his office, the chief was off on his rounds across the deck, checking in on the dinning hall, holding cells, and everything in between. As he received reports from the men he passed, he returned their reports with that of his own, the news of their new captain. The general sense of surprise and confusion was universal it seemed. Henry, however, remained calm on the surface and carried on as per normal. Hopefully the men would follow suit.
