Casey Carter
"Time for some thrilling heroics."
------------------------------------------------------
Full name- Casey Carter
Nicknames/Alias - First or last name is fine. Known as "Sparrow" to a select few.
Age - 24
Date of Birth - February 4th, 2496
Place of Birth - Ezra (Georgia System)
Gender - Female
Sexual Orientation - heterosexual
Affiliation - Independence/neutral
Occupation - Formerly a grifter/thief growing up, settled into occupation of pilot later in life.
Play-By - Maggie Grace
Build - Slender & tall
Height & Weight -1.75 m/175cm/5'9"
Hair - Born with long dark brown hair, recently dyed blonde.
Eyes - Brown
Unique Features - Tattoo of a sparrow on her right forearm, symbolizing her time/role in the BoF Gang (her code-name being Sparrow)
Dressing Style - Typically wearing a piloting outfit onesie, often unzipping and taking off the top-half to hang on her waist (like some pilots in BSG). Under that pilot jumpsuit is an undershirt and underwear (which can be seen depicted in PB photos). Also usually wears boots when she works. Not too much of a girly-girl when it comes to fashion.
Other - They say that as a writer, you always put a bit of yourselves into your characters. Since I lead a happy, normal, boring life, it is strange then that I have a pattern of making deep and dark characters. Casey Carter is no exception. As I began to flesh out the character, I envisioned certain qualities for her: specifically, her being snarky, off-putting, not trusting a whole lot of people. To achieve this on a personality level, I would've had to establish past events that changed her dramatically. Once I thought of a abusive childhood, I continued the pattern into her teen and early adult life. Basically, unlike me, she's lived a very rough and unpromising life. I would like to note that at this point, she seeks to kind of change her ways to become someone better, to become more. Her abusive father, her life as a slave, and the betrayal of Swift leads to her distrust of people, mostly men. Her love life will struggle immensely, although she'll secretly want to be loved. Similarly, her fight for survival on Persephone, killing her own father for revenge, and joining up with a gang to learn a trade (pilot) also shapes her into the criminal that she is today. Although she is willing to steal, smuggle, and commit other crimes, she draws the line at harming/hurting/killing people and despises the sex trade. The sex trade itself is only a niche of a larger underworld of crime, and she stays clear of anyone or anything associated with that trade.
Likes - Flying, traveling to new places/exploring, experiencing new people and meeting new cultures, alone time, reading/writing, enjoys helping out the poor and unfortunate.
Dislikes - Personal victim of sex trafficking/slave ring so she hates anyone in the slave trade, dislikes large crowds, dishonest people, commits some crimes (e.g. theft and smuggling) but dislikes the violence against innocent people, hates bullies/tyrants, in general distrusts men.
Quirks/Habits - Casey has a quick silver tongue, and usually makes snarky/witty comments once she gets to know people. If she is in a new setting, she is usually defensively quiet and unsure how to interact with people. She's terrible at making friends and even worse at dating. Largely because she was a victim of sex trafficking, she has trust issues with men when it comes to romantic situations, or trusting men in general.
Fears - Being alone. In part-because she's used to pushing people away, and also because important people in her life have betrayed her and she lost her trust/faith in humanity a bit.
Secrets - Killed her father for sending her into the life of a sex slave (and murdered her "owner" there too). Also was part of a notorious gang that robbed locally in the Georgia System (with a few appearances closer to the central planets).
Strengths - Excellent at making observations and gathering information about people or places. Can read people and notice the subtle gestures, a skill commonly used when gambling to see their bluffs or an interrogation skill she picked up to see if people lie to her (Perspective/Wisdom). Casey, once she trusts someone, can be extremely loyal and will be willing to help her friends in any way. Although she is a somewhat seasoned criminal, she also has morals (like Mal returning the stolen medicine). For someone who has been abused mentally and physically all her life, she is surprisingly strong-willed and grounded by perseverance and hope (hope for a better future).
Weaknesses - Known to be socially awkward to people she doesn't know, has mood swings and is overemotional (easily angered or easily frightened), and not the best at combat (knows how to use a gun, but lacks talent or precision. Hand-to-hand is out of the question, considering her lack of skill and size).
Talents/Special Abilities - Excellent/natural piloting skills, talented grifter/pickpocket/overall thief ability, highly observant.
Aspirations - Wants to be loved and accepted. Wants a real family (cuz her old one sucked and people betrayed the shit out of her).
Overall Personality - It was briefly mentioned before, but Casey is usually quiet when first meeting/interacting with people. She's hard to get out of her shell, but once you do, you'll find that she's genuine and highly vulnerable. People have wronged her in the past frequently, but she still desires to connect with people, and wants to trust them.
Father -Lee Carter (d. killed in 2514)
Mother -Esther Shay (born out of wedlock to this couple) (d. 2496)
Siblings -Mother died giving birth to Casey and father did not remarry, so no siblings. (Might have a side plot down the line where Lee Carter has another child out of wedlock and Casey does not learn about him/her well after his death. Might make a good story about the past coming back to haunt you or something.)
Other Significant People - Her friend and caretaker Sister Mary-Edwards of the orphanage. She got to know a few of the other orphans on Persephone, one of whom was an especially close friend name Serena.
Others would include the people in her gang, people that she spent the longest time with and were essentially her family. The captain/leader, Bishop, became a second father to her. People like Finch and Thrasher were almost like her close brothers.
Pets - Had a newt growing up as a child; named it Artemis.
Your History -
2496: Casey was born to a Lee Carter and Esther Shay in February. The family is from a small mining town on Ezra. Lee worked in the mines and was dating Esther (who worked as a bartender) and the pair ended up having a child out of wedlock. The two were very happy and much in love before Casey was born. Because Ezra is generally a poor and arid planet, there were some complications at birth for Esther and she died of an infection quickly after giving birth to her daughter.
A devastated Lee Carter was left with a daughter and a poor, dead-end job at the mine. He tried his best to love and raise his daughter, but she looked too much like Esther and reminded him too much of his lost love. Over time, he began to resent Casey's existence, and would later associate her birth to his future wife's death (i.e. blaming her for Esther's death). Throughout her childhood, Lee would occasional abuse his daughter, but those moments only began occur sometime around the age of 5, when Casey was "old enough" to get beaten for "misbehaving".
2506 (around the start of the Unification War): For a majority of her childhood (up until 10) things were shaky between Casey and her father. He taught her a lot about her heritage, the worlds in general, and gave her life lessons. At the same time, he continued his verbal and the occasional physical abuse. Even after a decade of hurting, Lee continued to lash out against his own daughter for the death of his fiancé. Around this time he began exploring ways to ease the pain of his deceased fiancé. His devastation led to destructive behavior, and Lee quickly fell prey to vices such as drinking and gambling, later going into drugs. Around the age of 10, Casey saw her father's behavior escalate from the occasional angry father to a violent drunk that terrorized his own daughter.
2509: From the time Casey was 10 to 13 years of age, Lee fell off into the deep-end. No longer teaching his daughter about the world, his resentment at Casey grew, which then became expressed through verbal and physical abuse. People came knocking to collect debts, the most notable of which was a loan that was taken out through a local syndicate in the Georgia System. Without any way of rubbing two coins together to settle debts, and after losing his job to abusive substances, a druggy washout of a father gave his own daughter away in order to settle his largest debts.
In 2509 during the war, Casey was sold into slavery/sex trafficking at age 13.
2511: By the time of Serenity Valley, and the quick turning of the war in favor of the Alliance, Casey was 15. At this point in her life she belonged to a wealthy businessman from Persephone, in the White Sun System. He kept her in a separate location so that his family (wife and kids) would not find out about his tendencies of sexually abusing a young girl. Before she turned 16, Casey planned and worked up the courage to kill her captor, and ran away into night when she did. Because she was off the grid for such a long time and did not have any prior criminal activity before, the plentiful evidence around when the body of the businessman was discovered could not be tied to anyone, and it was left as a cold-case when they failed to connect the DNA to anyone on file or an unknown mystery girl held prisoner in the house.
Afterward, Casey stumbled upon an orphanage in the poorer parts of Persephone. She spent a time growing up there and on the streets. If she did not stay at the orphanage, she would go out into the bustling streets and learn to pickpocket and steal for survival. She befriended a "woman of God" (or nun) that ran the orphanage, a Sister Mary-Edwards, as well as an orphan girl named Serena who was slightly younger than her. Sister Mary-Edwards always insisted Casey follow God's path for her (implicitly the path of righteousness) but now that she was free from her life as a slave she sought only vengeance.
Part of why she learned to steal was so that Casey could afford passage from Persephone back to her home planet on Ezra in the Georgia System. More specifically, she wanted to confront the man that condemned her life, her father Lee Carter.
2514: At the age of 18, three years after the Unification War ended and three years after her escape, Casey managed to save enough to buy transport off world. With a heavy heart she left the orphanage and promised to return to get her friend Serena.
Back on Ezra, she broke into her old house to find a spaced-out and most likely drugged-out father sprawled on the couch. She hesitated to use her knife and end his life, but was immediately brought back to reality when he lunged at her, becoming surprisingly lucid in seconds. After a short brawl and some physical fighting on both ends, Casey managed to have Lee land on her knife during the entanglement.
Satisfied that she resolved the issues from her old life, she then decided to continue what she's good at: being a criminal.
2514-2520: For the next couple years (18 yr old to 24) Casey made friends/contacts in the criminal underworld and learned to become a decently skilled pilot. It was later in the year of 2514 when she met a man named Bishop would offered her a job with his crew. It was later clarified that this crew was more of a gang, one that called themselves "Birds of a Feather". Each member of the crew had a codename related to a small bird.
Note: I added PBs because its how I envisioned them looking. If any of these PBs are currently being used by active players I apologize. If not, then a few should definitely be considered as NPCs.
Bishop: Captain, head of operations (PB Matt Nable).
Swift: First mate, assisted with operations or a gunhand (PB Lou Diamond Phillips).
Larks: Mechanic, occasional gunhand (PB Aaron Douglas).
Finch: Tech, specifically security systems and hacking specialist (PB Fran Kranz).
Thrasher: Gunhand (PB Roger R. Cross) .
Wren: Gunhand (PB Ming-Na Wen).
Sparrow: Pilot, Casey Carter (PB Maggie Grace, of course).
Part of the purpose of the codenames was to never use their real names. When the group was formed, they vowed to never to reveal their identities to one another. This way, if one was ever captured from a foiled heist, the captive person could only honestly admit the name of the bird assigned to the person and never the real person.
The BoF Gang gained notoriety mostly in their local area of the Georgia system, but had been known to do a job or two in White Sun too. They were not as widely known as some other groups and certainly not as feared as Reavers, but BoF garnered enough attention over the years ranging from top criminal associates to Alliance law officials as well.
2520: By May of this year, Casey was a talented and experienced pilot, who had gathered enough associates and contacts from BoF or by herself. Her alternate identity of Sparrow (along with the rest of the BoF gang) has gained a lot of attention already.
When contracted to do a huge job, one of the gang members (Swift, the First-Mate) decided that the amount was too large to split up evenly, and took it upon himself to strategically take out the rest of his teammates. When the job actually took place, Swift sold out the crew on the job (Wren, Bishop, Thrasher & Larks) and they were all killed in a firefight. Swift was supposed to be there during the job but conveniently got away just as he flipped on his former teammates. Back on the ship, Finch (head of tech and a hacker) was arrested by Alliance officials when Swift called in the tip that the BoF Gang was in town for the job.
A confused Casey returned to the ship after stepping away for a bit, only to watch from a distance as her closest friend, Finch, got arrested. On high alert, Casey realized that her only way out of this mess was to flee the area. Finding an opportunity to sneak aboard the ship, she began to fly away and out of the town successfully, but was soon forced to crash-land when she experienced engine-failure (no doubt the sabotage work of Swift). The whole event was supposed to end Sparrow's life, but she miraculously survived the crash. After trying the comms on her ship, she realized that all her teammates were either dead or captured. Upon investigating the sabotaged engine, she rationalized that such a skilled effort could only be done by Larks (the mechanic) or people that owned the ship (Bishop & Swift). Understanding that Swift was always quiet and super sketchy, Casey firmly believed by this point that Bishop and Larks were not to blame, and that Swift sold them all out.
Casey, a wanted criminal, could not go to the authorities, and she understood that if she tried to claim her portion of the cut from the job it could have her easily spotted and killed by the remaining partner (presumably Swift).
May 2520: It's at this point Casey turned for help, and coincidentally/by fate meets Roger and his crew. (This part isn't entirely fleshed out yet or RPed, but edits will be made with further detail is agreed upon. Ideally, in the future, Casey ultimately becomes the head pilot of the Peerless crew.)

Roleplay Example -
Breaking into her old house was a lot easier than she anticipated.
Using the sawed-off shotgun that she brought with her, Casey blew off the doorknob to the entrance of the ranch-style house that was located right on the edge of town. She cocked her head and smirked to herself as she watched the door creak open. Still on alert, she used the barrel of the gun to lead her into the house.
Walking into her childhood home felt like walking through a dream. Memories began to flood back to her, and she felt a bit dizzy with each quiet step she took. Casey immediately noticed the dusty furniture, the peeling faded wallpaper, and the crooked cracked photographs that still hung on the wall. The entire house felt like a museum, some sort of twisted preservation of a time long ago when people in those four walls used to be happy.
After walking through the entrance and navigating through the hallway, Casey turned the corner into the living room. There, she felt her stomach drop and her heart stop. Sprawled on the couch was the frail, pale, unshaven man that was her father. Of all the memories that she had of this place, none were stronger than the feelings she had towards this man. Lee Carter was once a proud miner that ended up falling under his own self-destruction; someone who refused to change his life, and sacrificed his own daughter to address his personal troubles. Her finger twitched for a second on the trigger when she spotted him. It took all the self restraint that she had to not pull it. She didn't want his death to be that easy. She didn't want him to die drugged up and dazed. She wanted him to suffer.
Casey quietly placed the shotgun down, and eased it against the doorframe that led to the living room. She unsheathed her knife and strolled over to her father. She stood over him and watched him drool as he slept. She found him utterly revolting. Angered now, she took the flat part of the blade and tapped him twice on the forehead.
"Hey bonehead. Ready for a family reunion?" she hissed.
After a long pause, Lee sprung into action. Wide-eyed and raging mad, he jumped up from the couch and tackled his daughter to the floor. The brawl in full swing now, Lee bit her forearm and she in turn dropped the knife. She screamed out in pain, blood oozing from the wound. Her father's mouth was completed slathered in blood now, and he continued to assault her.
Casey struggled and fought back, but was surprised by the strength of her drugged-out father. Shifting all his weight on top of her, he pinned her arms and legs down.
"Well look who it is…" he giggled, slurring his words as he spoke. He was still drooling a bit, a stream of it landing on her face. Casey looked up helplessly as Lee continued to examine her quietly, his heavy breathing the only noise noticeable in that span of silence. Through his shifty eyes, she watched as he struggled to remember her.
"Let's see if you learned anything while you were away…" he chuckled, and began to force himself on her. He lifted his waist and reached down with one hand to unzip his jeans. Casey had only arrived to her childhood home minutes ago, and she was now alone and terrified, reliving one the most painful memories that she hoped to never experience again. It angered her deeply, and in her frustration, she began to cry out. This breakdown only made Lee Carter laugh harder.
Her father distracted by her beauty, she quickly saw out of the corner of her eye that the blade was within arm's reach. Using her left hand, she stretched out as much as possible. She felt the muscles in her arm strain from the effort, and more blood began to spill out on the dusty floor from her forearm. Simultaneously, she struggled against her father.
After what seemed like a long twenty seconds of struggling, she managed to use the tips of her fingers to latch onto the edge of the knife's handle. She inched it quietly in her direction, and immediately gripped tighter when she got the chance.
It was her turn to surprise him now. After pushing her knees up to distance Lee from her waist, she pushed him off to the side. With the blade pointed upwards from her outstretched arm, she successfully had her father land on it as he rolled over. Lee cried out in pain, his face twisted and twitched each way. His entire back was on her left hand now, and she not only felt the weight of his entire body, but also his blood as it spilled out from the knife wound and on to her hand. Straining a few seconds longer, Casey let go of the knife and pulled her hand out from under him. She sat up from the floor and panted sporadically as her father lying next to her continued to slowly die.
In the moments of pain he was experiencing, Lee was lucid for his death. Blood rising in his mouth, he continued to suffer as he stared up at the ceiling. His eyes were wandering, and didn't lock on anything until he saw his daughter get up to stand over him. She looked down right back at him, made eye contact, her face expressionless.
"Casey…" he struggled to say, the blood gurgling from his mouth. Just as quietly as Lee Carter entered the world, so did he leave it. Not responding to his pleas, Casey stood over him silently as he passed.
She felt like she was no longer dreaming. She was grounded by reality once more. The reality being, that the universe needed not to suffer a moment longer of this awful person. In that instance, she was at peace.
Soon after, Casey realized what she had done. She ran around the apartment to bandage her wounds and gather her things: she wiped the blade on her father's jeans and sheathed it once more. Sore and limping in pain over to the doorframe, she picked up her sawed-off shotgun.
She was at last done with this awful place. With her head held high, she walked right out the door and into the desert.
