OVERALL PERSONALITY
Friedrich is one of those people that can be a little tough to crack. He is rather cold and professional to most, distant even. Get to know him, or even better get some drinks in him, and you might see a warmer side of the machinist.
Hoffman has a very strong work ethic, is determined in that work, and is deferential and obedient. He enjoys a challenge and has a reputation for always getting the job done. It may take longer than originally expected but he's never met a problem, mechanical at least, that he couldn't solve.
As his name might suggest, Friedrich is a speaker of the German mutt tongue. He is fluent in English and conversational in Chinese but German remains his primary language and his accent carries over heavily into his other languages. At times this can make it seem like he's not fluent at all. When his blood gets pumping through the excitement of a clever idea, the rush of a firefight, or the warmth of a pint of beer his German will seep through even further into his vocabulary.
Friedrich is also no stranger to violence. He knows how to handle himself and a weapon but he was has never been much of a standout nor does he particularly gravitate toward that type job.

BACKSTORYFriedrich was born on Geneva, Beaumonde's larger moon, the oldest of three children. His father Albert ran a machine shop and well, that set the stage for young Friedrich's entire life. From as far back as he can remember, the young boy would spend time at the shop. As he got older his father would show him a thing or two, even allow the child to do a little something here or there. By the time he was a teenager the simple lessons had ended and a young Friedrich was working in the shop a few hours a day. By age sixteen he was familiar with near everything they did in the shop and was often trusted with taking care of business when his father was out.
It was a good setup but for an eventual downturn in the economy. Work started to dry up in the shop until there was hardly enough even for one person to perform. Thus, Friedrich left home at age 18 and went to work downtown at the shipyard. The scale of the work was much grander, but for the most part the concepts were the same at least for Hoffman's involvement in the constructions. He'd work in the yards for only about two years until his uncle had a brilliant idea.
At age 20, Derik Hoffman got himself wrapped up in a military fervor as the Red Sun Pact started a war on the other side of the 'Verse. Friedrich still wasn't sure what the reasons were for going. His uncle seemed to make up a different excuse for whomever he was speaking to at the time. Political ideology, past slights and insults, vague principles, adventure and glory... All Friedrich knew was that some of his kin and many of his friends were going off to war so it seemed to make sense to follow them.
Geneva nor its parent Beaumonde, however, were involved in this distant battle. But that wasn't going to impede this band of determined Germans. Derik managed to create a German-speaking battalion in the newly formed Commonwealth Foreign Legion and before long they were all kitted out and shipped off to war. It wasn't much of anything his uncle said it would be on a personal level nor did the conclusion of the conflict satisfy any loftier goals. However, in combat Hoffman found an odd camaraderie which he came to enjoy despite the horrors that surrounded them.
The war ended in '77 but Hoffman didn't leave the Legion until '79 after six years in the service. His first stop was Beylix where he tried to get back into civilian life. He landed a job repairing junked starships and making them at least somewhat usable, but more importantly it was here he met Lucia, feel in love, married her, then started to hate her, and eventually divorced her all within the course of fourteen months. Finally free of his ball and chain, Hoffman decided to leave Beylix behind and maybe celebrate a bit as well. On the casino ship the Promised Land, he crossed paths with a pair of, well, even to this day he's not entirely sure what job title to give them. Anya and Marco Ortega offered him a job keeping their ship in the sky and that's where he's been for the past year, listening to their never ending cycle of romantic moments and then horrible fights. True love?ROLEPLAY SAMPLE
The driver was quick to react and halt the vehicle even if she didn't seem to understand why they were suddenly stopping in the middle of the busy street with ruthless killers still chasing after them and a rather attention grabbing explosion not all too far behind them. As soon as the mule had come to a stop, or actually a bit before that, the two others had both jumped out and rushed over to where their leader had come to rest amid the debris of some outdoor restaurant and its patrons.
Friedrich, however, kept his seat in the mule. "Zurück." he said hurriedly to their driver. "Go back, schnell." Jumping out and running over to their presumably wounded comrade was all well and good but the highest priority was for them all to get back in the mule and get the hell out of dodge. They didn't have time to waste no matter how injured their leader was or how delicious that restaurant's hors d'oeuvres might be. Toss him in the mule and get him help someplace else.
When the mule finally revered and joined the others, Hoffman finally exited the vehicle. Instead of joining the group huddled around the wounded crewmate, Friedrich kept his attention to the street and the crowd of onlookers... someone had to. "Los, verschwinden wir!" he called after a moment over toward the others. "Ve haf to moof!"
