OVERALL PERSONALITY
Roger is a soldier at heart. He's not the type to seek trouble, but when he finds it he will never pass up the opportunity and won't stop until the fight is won. He's brave and determined, but he's often obstinate and overly aggressive too. Roger is also honorable, honest, and kind always playing by his own strong set of morals. In short, he won't hesitate to kick you until you go down, but he would never kick you while you're down.
On a personal level, Roger is very down to Earth in the most literally sense. His upbringing has led to rather rural tastes in all areas of life from cuisine to attire, pastimes to living conditions. Although rather stern and serious, Roger still has a sense of humor and enjoys his downtime. The Peerless is a "no fun zone" only so far as such activity would interfere with the mission.
As a leader, Roger is the type to lead from the front who wouldn't ask a subordinate to do something he wouldn't be willing to do himself. He demands discipline from his subordinates and in turn works tirelessly to make sure their commitment is well rewarded. For those who have earned his trust, Roger is more likely than most leaders would be to delegate assignments and authority on his subordinates.

Player name/alias: RogerBACKSTORYRoger was born in Bedford County, Verbena in 2551 the second of four sons to Jonathan and Lydia Davis. His parents were wealthy landowners, running the farm that had been in the family for the past 130 years back when Horatio Davis had arrived in the first wave of settlement on the second planet of the Kalidasa system. Since then the Davis family had become rather influential in the county, and later on Roger's father would eventually serve as the mayor of nearby Port Towson in the '60s, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Despite being born to wealthy parents, Roger still grew up on the farm. He learned the ins and outs of the business from planting and harvesting to basic tractor repair and animal husbandry. As a country boy he learned to ride, to hunt, to track, and to shoot. Roger of course went to school as well. He did reasonably well in his studies, but he never much enjoyed the classroom environment nor was he ever as passionate about his school subjects as he was about the various skills he could learn back home.
Roger's childhood was fairly uneventful. He had a wholesome life with his parents and three brothers. He split his time between school in the nearby port and home back on the farm. It was a good life, one which Roger looks back on fondly, and after getting out into the "real world" he later realized how very fortunate he was to have such a great childhood.
In 2569 at the age of 18 Roger entered the Commonwealth Academy, Verbena's premier military academy. It was a compromise between Roger wanting a life of adventure and practical knowledge and his parents wanting him to get a higher education. As it turned out, it was a perfect fit. Roger loved the military atmosphere as well as the specialized training associated with it. Again, his enthusiasm and performance academically left something to be desired, but he graduated without trouble and entered the Verbena armed service in '73 as a mech platoon commander.
Of course, the mid seventies were not the most peaceful times for certain parts of the 'Verse. Leading up to his graduation, war broke out in the Red Sun system with Harvest and its extended sphere of allies against Red Sun's innermost planets, Jiangyin and New Melbourne. Shortly after his commissioning, Roger was sent off to war as the Commonwealth honored its military alliance with New Melbourne and joined what would later be named the Red Pact War or the War of Containment depending on which side you fought.
The first two years of Roger's war was spent on and around New Melbourne as part of the Commonwealth's 1st Army, an assemblage of regular units and pre-existing militia forces that could be rushed to their ally's defense as soon as possible. The first few months saw Harvest throw its full might in sheer numbers against them. Fully armed and armored mechs with well trained and disciplined drivers, however, can make short work of light infantry conscripted last week no matter their numbers. Soon Commonwealth forces were on the advance and before long New Melbourne was secured and the war moved into a prolonged engagement over the real reason the war was being fought... control of the Motherlode asteroid belt.
Things were slower on the belt and not just because of the vastly changed conditions from a fight planetside. Out there you needed to worry about everything from your oxygen supply to the current gravity conditions and solar radiation to any number of objects that could decide to collide with your rock and ruin your day. Aside from that they were now fighting a different kind of enemy. Out here you were either well trained and well equipped or you would be dead before the enemy ever reached you. It became a game of cat and mouse sweeping various areas of the belt instead of just holding down the trigger as the enemy ran into you. Roger spent over a year fighting in the West Indies section of Motherlode and when he was finally rotated out the fight was still long from finished.
But by 2775 the war was progressing steadily as that original expeditionary force had been greatly reinforced by the now mobilizing Commonwealth not to mention the rejuvenated forces of Jiangyin and New Melbourne. In the past two years, Roger's brothers Jonathan and Matthew had both joined up, the former gaining a commission as a staff officer and the latter enlisting in the infantry. Upon being rotated out, Roger was promoted to captain and given a full company of mechs for his next assignment opening additional fronts against Harvest and its allies. For Roger this meant being sent to Paquin on the edge of the system to try and knock the less committed world out of the fight, a strategy that would succeed in causing a domino effect and eventually leaving Harvest alone and willing to make peace. However, that was still a few years off.
The arrival of a Commonwealth fleet over Paquin and the immediate landing of troops was a complete surprise to the locals. A few military targets put up resistance but for the most part Paquin fell without a fight having neither the will to resist nor the requisite military forces back home to properly defend themselves at least for the moment. Two weeks after arriving, and while Commonwealth units were still attempting to fully secure the planet, enemy forces arrived to retake Paquin. This was no longer the disorganized slaughter of the early war, but hard fought battles against hardened veteran units. Commonwealth forces were spread thin over such a wide area of operations leading to many small, but bloody engagements.
Roger found himself the most senior officer more often than not, and his mechs saw plenty of action responding to as many little flashpoints as possible. It was in one such battle northwest of Divantra that Roger's war came to a screeching halt. While fighting across open terrain to relieve a pinned down infantry position, enemy gunships strafed the advancing mechs. Both the mech and Roger inside it were hit and went down on that field. When they finally managed to pull Roger out of the wreck, his right leg was a bloody mess and he was unconscious.
Roger was immediately evacuated back to a field hospital and then off world. Originally it had seemed a certainty that he'd lose the leg but miraculously the surgeons were able to save it. But miracles have their limits. Although not maimed, Roger was grievously wounded and was thus discharged from the military just days after being formally recognized for his valor on Paquin.
Needless to say, Roger was not happy. He didn't want to be bedridden or hobbling around on crutches, nor did he want to sit out of the rest of the war while his friends and countrymen were still fighting. After a few months of recovery, Roger managed to convince the county executive that he was still capable of serving if only in a limited capacity. He was given a letter of marque and enlisted into a growing force of privateers to supplement the Commonwealth naval forces.
The only problem was that Roger didn't have a ship, but Verbena did have a ready supply line through the starship supertrade. Davis was directed to the Syndicate on Persephone where he acquired the Peerless and over the next few weeks would assemble and train his men. The crew was an unconventional bunch mostly types that wanted to fight but didn't like the military, or the kinds of guys who wanted to be in the military but were refused for one reason or another. The captain with a limp ended up commanding a ship of misfits, young men physically able save for some minor medical handicap holding them back, and wannabe soldiers from nations uninvolved in the conflict. The most normal person aboard was Roger's youngest brother Ryan who was just 19.
For the next year, Roger and the Peerless would support the war effort. They raided civilian shipping for the most part, but occasionally would hit military targets as well. On rare occasions privateers would be called in to support regular operations too, either lending their firepower to a fight or acting as impromptu transports. The war soon ended in 2577 with little to nothing to show for all the lives lost and devastation caused. No territory was exchanged, no concessions were made, and there were no reparations or other punishments imposed. And most importantly, the issue wasn't resolved but remains a major point of contention now even five years later.
With the war over, Roger was no longer a privateer, at least until Verbena called on him for the next conflict. But he'd also been discharged from the service, so other than returning home to the farm, Roger really didn't have anything waiting for him. What he did have, however, was a ship and a few good men. The Peerless went from privateer to mercenary and has functioned in that capacity for the past five years with various upgrades and changes to the ship and crew along the way. Davis takes all manner of contract from basic security operations to bounty hunting work. Like the acquisition of the ship, the contracts can be morally gray, but Roger still keeps to his code and refuses work that is patently criminal.ROLEPLAY SAMPLE
"Clear." Roger replied to Vitale with a smile. Things had indeed turned to shit but they'd come through alright. Maybe from now on Roger would do the talking but Vitale had certainly just proved his skills handling a gun in a difficult situation. They walked right into the hornets' nest and managed to kill all the ruttin' hornets.
First things first, Roger holstered his left and reloaded his right 1911 as he walked toward the bar while Vitale instructed the others that remained to get lost. Might not have been the best idea but it's not like they'd go and tell the authorities faster than the 30 some gunshots that had been fired a minute earlier. "Sorry about the mess." Roger said as he placed a small wad of bills on the bar. It wasn't much but it would cover the physical damages to the building at least. Not like you could really pay for the loss of life or feeling of security for one's patrons. The barkeep didn't seem to question it as he quickly grabbed the cash as he too exited the room in a hurry.
Roger helped himself with a swig from Vitale's bottle that was still sitting there atop the counter top. He looked over and noticed that Chev was now on his back and bleeding profusely from a stray round he'd caught in the fight. "Ta Ma Duh."
The captain ran over and took over the hurried interrogation as Vi shifted focus to keeping him alive, at least for the moment. "Listen to me, Bei Bi Shiou Ren." Roger grabbed Cheverus's shirt. "You might have lost a half liter already. Unless you start talking fast you ain't gonna make it."
