OVERALL PERSONALITY
She is guided by her passion instead of some standard set of morals. She considers herself an ethical person, but her moral compass doesn't necessarily overlap with what other people, and even the law, would consider right. The largest example of that in her life is that she began trials of an untested experiment on someone she loved in hopes that the procedure could cure him. She threw away her career and risked incarceration to use a medical experiment she had confidence in to try to give this man a fighting chance. She has never given up on anything that she seriously and deeply believed in, and in that most substantial case, it came at an extremely high price.
She is stubborn, bull-headed, and always wants to get her way. She is willing to face most challenges with her go-getter attitude. She has learned that there are times when one should stand down from a situation though. While she may not believe she's wrong, she will concede when the gains aren't worth the costs in a given situation.
While Esmay is slow to make friends, she holds the few she has very close to her heart and would do anything for them. If she does manage to get close to people beyond a professional setting and establish a friendship, she would spend the rest of her life in contact with them if there is any way she could manage it. She is very passionate and caring toward the people she calls friends.
Esmay can be very selfish in her actions. She has a hard time seeing past her desires and feelings in her life sometimes. She has a short fuse when things upset her and will show her wrath with the slightest provocation. Without someone to help her see reason, she can hold onto a grudge for a long time.

BACKSTORYEsmay Rose Willows was born to Dr. Johnston Willows and Dr. Temperance Willows. Her father was an Athenian bio-medical researcher, her mother a doctor of forensic pathology. Esmay was the youngest of five children. All of them were born into a family that would be able to offer them everything they could ever want.
Esmay's parents started her and her siblings' educations at a young age. Even before she was school-age, Esmay had her own personal tutors to guide her and teach her every detail of what she would need to know in life. Esmay, more than any of her sisters, caught onto everything. She was speaking two languages by the time she started school, and playing the piano with the grace and skill of a professional.
Esmay was also looked at by all the household staff as the family tyrant. She was demanding of everyone: her parents, her siblings, and, most of all, the staff. She hounded them all for more of everything she could get. Nothing got by her, not a word, and most definitely not one little scrap of knowledge. She was a bit of a brat, expecting everything to be done her way and right when she wanted it. Over time, the staff almost grew to resent her for her stubborn and selfish ways.
There came a day when she was ten that she demanded the staff be fired because she overheard them poking fun at the fact that she was ten and still needed a light on while she slept. All of her screaming and yelling was to no avail. Her father was her guiding light and set her straight, explaining to her how she could not do something like that to people just out of anger. Though she had reluctantly accepted her father's choice, it took months until she was willing to listen to any of them again and let her grudge go.
As she grew older, she was tested and found to have an eidetic memory. Her parents and involved faculty petitioned to expedite her education, feeling she would waste valuable time in courses remedial to her level of understanding. She was allowed to skip over a lot of courses through testing that showed a thorough grasp of the material, and her education was accelerated so that she finished high school at the age of sixteen. She was admitted to college in her home town as well: Richmond, Newhope. Her best friend from high school, Jeremiah Clark, had just turned eighteen and graduated that same year. He began his college education with her. She went for her PHD in bio-medical engineering, while he focused on chemical engineering. She made very few friends in college due to her isolated upbringing and focus on her studies, but she became closer and closer with Jeremiah.
By the time she was twenty, she had finished her bachelor's degree and began working alongside her father, who was working in bio-medical research for the Empire of Athens. Their project was a study of chemically-induced genetic therapies and gene manipulation. Jeremiah, by the request of Esmay, was brought on as an intern as well. Johnston could not have been prouder of his youngest daughter at that moment, believing that she had a brighter mind than even he had, even with all his years of experience. She quickly learned every detail of her father's work and was right there at his side for every breakthrough.
Jeremiah had joined the field for completely different reason than simple interest though. He suffered from a genetic abnormality that aged his bone cells at an accelerated rate that would likely kill him before the age of thirty. At the age of twenty, Esmay and Jeremiah were a couple with a bright future, or so she thought, until he finally told her about his condition. This exponentially increased her efforts to further the experiment. It also pushed her to pursue her education even harder, wanting to have every piece of knowledge she could put to use in the cause. Five months after her twenty-third birthday, she had complete her PHD and was on to her residency.
Now officially holding the title, Dr. Esmay Willows she was the youngest of the research team. The months plugged by and they continued to make forward progress, but Jeremiah's condition was deteriorating. In January of twenty-five eighty, Jeremiah's condition had gotten so bad that he was unable to continue working at the lab.
The research had not been approved for human testing yet, but they had run out of time and options. His condition was deteriorating rapidly, and the amount of time he would have left would likely not be more then a few more months at best. Esmay brought Jeremiah into the lab after hours using her father's security badge to get them in and began the first human trials. Things had looked hopeful by all the readings. Esmay had stepped out of the lab to grab more equipment that she had brought in from her father's home lab as the system was running its cycles on Jeremiah. What Esmay didn't know was that any badge in after hours would set off the alarm system. Her father responded, followed shortly by a team of feds. Before Esmay had returned to the building, the feds had arrived and entered to find Jeremiah there in the lab attached to the equipment and her father in the lab.
When confronted by the feds, Johnston confessed to beginning the human trials himself while Esmay hid, paralyzed with fear. Johnston was arrested, and Jeremiah was taken from the lab for further testing at a separate facility off-world. Esmay wouldn't have been able to deny her involvement if she'd been found, and no amount of protesting would have convinced the feds that her father hadn't been involved: they'd found him there. When the feds had cleared the two men and the main bulk of the equipment from the room they had left only a single guard in the room. As he began to take the computer she crept out from where she was hiding. Grabbing a syringe and some sedatives she charged him and injected him while he began to ask her to identify herself, knocking him out in only a minute.
She downloaded the files she needed and walked out of the lab trying to keep her cool as best she could, finding her way out the back before the feds could catch her or even knew what she'd just done. Once clear of the building she raced off toward home but as she closed she could see the feds had already made it there... she wasn't going to be able to return home. She sat there in her car in shock as she watched on. The building was surrounded and her mother was at the door with lines of feds making their way into the place no doubt to toss everything and see what they could turn up in her father's personal lab.
Finally she turned around and drove off. She had to figure out what she was going to do. For a while she debated turning herself in. After some time though she realized she had to complete the work and be able to help Jeremiah. She would need more time to figure out how to save him and that wasn't going to happen if she stayed here on Newhope.
She knew there would be no way that she would be able to make it to the docks and secure transport off the planet before the feds figured out she was there in the lab and was the one who attacked one of their men. She thus sent a wave to her Uncle Jacob asking for his help. He was able to set her up with everything she would need, namely an alternate identity to get herself off of Newhope. She would use her mother's maiden name. It was a simple change and one she could keep and would hold long enough for her to get off world. Next was the ship he got her passage on. She would gain passage aboard the White Strider, a simple cargo transport ship that worked basic runs for the Empire of Athens. It was a safe ship and wouldn't pose any trouble for her. Finally a destination, Santo, a tourist destination in White Sun that people could easily be lost in the mix of. It was everything she needed to be safely away from the Empire of Athens while Jacob fashioned her a whole new life to protect her from the feds.
Late that night, or early the following morning, depending on how you look at it, she made her way to the spaceport evading the ever growing presence of feds on the docks, and boarded the White Strider without incident. The trip between the two worlds was uneventful.
Presently, she's just arrived on Santo aboard the White Strider. Sometime after the raid of her home, the Empire of Athens broadcasted her name and photo across the Cortex as wanted as a suspect in an unspecified crime with a substantial reward. Unfortunately for her, the photograph came to the attention of the White Strider's captain before he---and she---had made it off of Santo.ROLEPLAY SAMPLEThe White Strider had landed and Esmay was now safe from the reach of the Empire of Athens, for now at least. It would buy her enough time to figure out what she needed to know to be able to save Jeremiah. She had bought him time, maybe a few years at best with the work they had done but it wasn't going to last forever. Mainly they had just reversed the damage that had happened so far but even with that it was still going to spread again and likely at an accelerated rate.
She said her goodbyes to the crew that had brought her there and paid them for their service. She left the ship with her bag in hand, walked down the ramp, and found herself at the docks. She reached into her bag to grab her wallet. She would need money to pay for her stay. It was then she realized she had forgotten it on the table in the galley where she was saying goodbye.
Esmay walked back up the ramp and made her way toward the galley. Just before she reached the door and before she could let the first words escape her mouth she could hear them talking in there, about her, who she really was though she had given them a false name. They spoke of a reward out for her and how they should go find her.
Her fist clenched the strap of her bag and her heart began to race. If she stood there any longer they would all come out that door and find her. Esmay turned to run out but instead crept along slowly out of fear she would make too much noise. Finally she made it down to the cargo bay and could see the light of the world outside the door again. She was so close. It was then that the mechanic walked up and placed a hand on her shoulder.
In that moment her heart stopped. They had caught her and she was now doomed to be returned to Newhope to face whatever fate the Empire of Athens had in store for her. Worse yet she would not be able to study Jeremiah's results and figure out what they could do to reverse the effects of his condition permanently.
"Temperance, take care of yourself out there, alright? It's not like Newhope out here."
The mechanic said to her with a smile on his face. At first she was confused. Why was he letting her go instead of taking her in? That is when it hit her. He had yet to hear what the others were talking about.
"You take care as well, William. And its Dr. Hawkins." She was of course joking with the last part. She had gotten along well with the mechanic. More so than any of the other crew surprisingly. Then she stepped off out of his grasp quickening her pace down the ramp and out of sight. She wasn't going to be able to get her wallet. She had a bit of cash on her and would likely have to use it to keep on the move one more time before she would finally be able to stop and rest. She moved down the docks mixing into the crowd hidden from view once again.
