The Wars of Independence
Dates: February 2520 - March 2548
Locations: White Sun, Georgia, Red Sun, Kalidasa, and Blue Sun Systems
Result: Alliance Defeat
Belligerents: Union of Allied Planets, numerous and varied other nations and factions
Prelude and CausesThe 'Verse unified under the Alliance only after a long and bloody war. Naturally, simply being defeated on the field of battle did not change many minds about wanting Alliance rule. Over the course of the next decades, the inhabitants of the Border and Rim experienced exactly what Alliance rule meant, and for most of them they were greatly dissatisfied.
The spark that ignited this growing discontent was evidence of abhorrent and unconscionable Alliance experiments against its own citizens. In 2517 the "Signal" was broadcast with allegations concerning a lost colony on the planet Miranda and a theory as to the origin of the Reavers. Although quickly discredited, more stories followed: genetic and psychological experiments on children, political corruption, intentional neglect of certain worlds, etc.
Not wanting to be part of the Alliance, not reaping the purported benefits of Alliance membership, in some cases suffering worse than ever, large populations being disenfranchised, and now black stain after stain on the Alliance's reputation were too much to bear. And one rebellion sparked the next. Emboldened by the success of their neighbors, a dozen small wars were fought in these three decades to turn back the tide of Alliance control.
Course of the WarThe Wars for Independence were numerous, varied, and lasted over two decades so keep in mind that this will be a very general description.
The first spark of the renewed Independence Movement would be in early 2520 on the planet Beylix in the Kalidasa system. Better known as the garbage capital of the 'Verse, initial reports of a resistance movement went largely ignored. In 2522 the local Alliance governor finally admitted the gravity of the situation, but his report was met only with a token response of added military support. Although the Alliance may have continued to underestimate the situation, the small scale escalation and more importantly the publicity accompanying prompted an increasing tide of sympathetic off-worlders to respond.
A few months later in 2523, the capital of Beylix fell, the governor was killed, and the small Alliance force was nearly wiped out. It was a shock to everyone in the 'Verse, including the rebels themselves. The Alliance responded swiftly, but yet again they underestimated the enemy force. They arrived prepared to stomp out an unruly rabble, what they should have done a year ago, but by now they were facing the semblance of an army. Alliance forces pushed the rebels back, but the rebellion was far from crushed.
For the next four years, the rebel army would remain engaged with the Alliance. Although there was regular fighting along various fronts, very little happened. The Alliance still outclassed the rebels, but the Alliance still lacked the manpower to leave their pockets of control and deal a decisive victory. Any thinning of the line resulted in a rebel counterattack, the encirclement and then annihilation of Alliance units which quickly led to Alliance leaders deciding to do nothing, dig in, and wait.
But as the Alliance remained inactive, the rebellion grew. Supplies came in steadily as did volunteers. Inexperienced youths were trained over this period by veterans of the Unification War. By 2526 the rebels truly were an army. Meanwhile, the Alliance had no equivalent mobilization or surge of war support back home while troops languished along the lines. Finally the attack came. Far more numerous, better equipped, and better trained than expected, the June 2526 offensive completely overran the Alliance foothold. 40% of Alliance installations fell in a single day. 70% had fallen by the end of the first week. By the end of the month, only one base remained which was soon evacuated by its commander against contrary orders from Alliance High Command.
This second shocking victory on Beylix caused a ripple across the system. Newhall declared its independence two weeks into the Offensive. Oberon followed the day after the final Alliance troops evacuated. Constance, deeper in the system was next and then Zephyr and Aberdeen. Early in 2527 Verbena and Beaumonde followed and soon it seemed the entire system was in revolt. And it was not limited to Kalidasa, smaller scale movements began to spark up in Red Sun, Georgia, and Blue Sun as well.
The forces of the victorious Beylix army went three separate ways. Some remained and formed the Penglai Entente. Others would return to their homes to fight for their own independence. The rest would form an international Independent army which for the next twenty years would support whichever worlds needed it most in their struggles.
The Alliance was far too busy with the wildfire of rebellion and never returned to Beylix. For a few years, they fought desperately, even mobilizing their full armed forces for the battle. By 2532 the war was not going well, and there was a massive turnover in Parliament. The new regime abandoned the previous policy of attempting to hold every single inch of ground and instead consolidated their forces. The Kalidasa system, by far the most rebellious and the farthest gone already, was abandoned completely, and Alliance forces were withdrawn back to the Georgia and Red Sun systems.
With the stroke of a pen, over a billion people were suddenly de facto independent. Although the Alliance dug in and consolidated, the other wars were not yet won. For the most part, these newly born states continued to support the wars of others. A few o the other conflicts were snuffed out, but for the most part rebellions continued to smolder on many worlds.
The next great blow came nine yeas later in 2541 when Persephone, a highly strategic world within the White Sun system itself, rebelled. Any worlds that had remained on the fence for fear of repercussions soon also rose up, and those rebellions that had died down over the past nine years suddenly flared again.
After six more years of war, the Alliance finally collapsed. Once a distant thing, the wars had come too close to home, both figuratively and literally. Daring rebel captains raided into the Core, trade was all but completely cut off, the economy had been in wartime production mode for over a decade, and an entire generation had now grown up during this conflict. In 2547 the Alliance negotiated a ceasefire, and by 2548 the withdrawal of Alliance forces from contested worlds was complete.
Aftermath and Impact
The Wars of Independence saw the Alliance retreat to its pre-2506 borders with the exceptions of Ares and Conrad, two moons in the Georgia System. In its wake, numerous new governments sprung up and soon the 'Verse was back to its pre-unification state. All the ills of small scale wars and conflicts between small worlds occur again, and some worlds dominate others, but for the most part worlds are independent or voluntarily members of larger groups.
Since these wars, the Alliance has not successfully made any advances, and every year it seems the Core grows relatively weaker as the Border and Rim worlds grow. Although far from utopic, these formerly depressed economics are generally growing more than ever and becoming independent economically from the Core as well as politically. The war itself largely fueled this requirement for industrialization, self-sufficiency, and inter connected-ness with other Rim worlds in place of the Core.
The war itself was incredibly long and devastating to those worlds it passed through, although fortunately the conflict did not linger one place for too long. Entire generations fought and died in the war, often with fathers fighting in the early conflicts and their young sons finishing the war in the later years. It also required an enormous investment from governments, both the established Alliance and the fledgling new nations of the Rim, to finance such a long drawn affair.
One thing that did not survive the war, was the idea for a confederacy of independent planets. With the Alliance finally defeated, most worlds decided to stake out on their own. With no enemy to fight or organization to pledge themselves to, the resurgent Independent units disbanded and returned to their respective homes. Perhaps in the next crisis such a unification will happen again, but it seems the Rim and Border are still too divided to come together for anything but a wartime coalition.
