The first moon of Deadwood, Haven is about as remote and rural as you can get, at about 95 AU from the center of White Sun and with a minuscule population density (1 person per 228 square kilometers or 88 square miles).
Haven, as one of Deadwood's moons, was among the first worlds to be terraformed in the outermost systems and was the testbed of an experimental new process. After Deadwood and its moons were reformed and the science had been proven, however, they were neglected as attentions shifted elsewhere. This allowed enterprising colonists to settle on the land without the typical government or corporate interests found in the settlement of most other worlds. Even more remarkable is that these early colonists managed to hold onto their rights and claims even after attentions returned to the system.
Haven in particular is known as a fiercely independent world. Haven has a large farming and ranching base as can be found on many Rim worlds, but the economy of Haven is really fueled by the rich mining operations. Far from exhausted (or even fully explored) by the moon's small population, many outsiders have covetously sought to lay claim to this backwater and strip it of its resources. Remnants of an Alliance operation can be found on Haven, operating for only two years before it was abandoned during the early phase of the Wars of Independence. Since then, numerous private corporations have attempted to take control as well. One such struggle even led to a full scale war.
The mines provide Haven with a source of wealth and the threats to Haven's sovereignty provides the main expenditure of the small moon. Haven has fairly sizable military considering their small population base. And rather than being the stereotypical backwater militia force, Haven soldiers are remarkably well trained and equipped though they remain insignificant in the grand scheme of international politics. Haven also notably has considerable surface-to-air installations to supplement their professional ground forces in defending their territory.
As the name suggests, Haven can be a refugee for those trying to hide from major governments or corporations. If one earns the trust of the locals, there are few safer places in the 'Verse to lay low.
