OVERALL PERSONALITYHumanmetric Jung Typology Test: ESTPExtravert (56%) Sensing (50%) Thinking (1%) Perceiving (78%)Jay is the quintessential free spirit, a proven outlaw that seeks only to preserve his freedom and personal wealth. Although his motives may be unclear at times, Jay's unquestionable loyalties are to himself, his ship, and his crew. And while Harper is completely comfortable with smuggling and robbing from "anyone that deserves it", his own twisted moral code prevents him from killing or stealing from innocents. When faced with certain death or capture however, Jay is willing to do whatever it takes to protect what is his.
As a man who has faced his own death many times, Harper tends to experience and appreciate life in his own unique way. Drugs, alcohol, and unchaste women are all personal vices for Jay that spawn from an insatiable desire for danger and adventure. While the score is usually rewarding in itself, Jay takes great pleasure in the thrill of planning and executing heists and robberies. When it comes to combat, recklessness is smothered by the greater sense of survival, and whenever possible, Harper will avoid confrontations with the law or other warring parties that are involved.
Harper is an easy-going bloke that is set on living in the moment. Despite the innumerable acquaintances and connections that he's made, little is publicly known about the man himself, as he readily refuses to discuss his past. His reputation as an outlaw is usually enough to garner a crew, and it is only through the proven loyalty and patience of his constituents that exceptions are made to open up about himself.
Quite simply, he's a rebel who's set on pitting himself against the 'verse.

BACKSTORY
Jason was a baby born out of wedlock, the result of an affair between a soldier on shore leave and a poor mistress. Dropped off at a fire station, Jason was an unwanted child that was immediately subject to the Foster Care System. Growing up, Jay was moved around in several homes, largely due to his rebellious attitude, outbursts, and general resistance to authority. Although he was provided with many opportunities to assimilate with a family, Jay simply didn't feel like he belong in any home in particular. After several homes and several attempts to escape, a young Jay Harper finally managed to run away, and was released to the streets of Sihnon by 14.
The next four years would be rough for Jay, as he slowly adapted to living on the streets. It was during this time he learned to steal, to barter, and to manipulate people. Although he finally had his freedom after all this time, Jay still longed for purpose and stability. Throughout his years on the streets, he often daydreamed about joining the military are being part of something more than himself. By the time he was 18, he managed to save enough money to start his college career. With the assistance of the military through a recruitment program, coupled with his own academic merit and scholarships, Harper would be able to go on and finish the schooling he started. Commissioned and flight schooled at 23 after already graduating college, Jay served 3 years of peace time service before entering the Six Years War.
3 years into the Six Years War earned the budding pilot a commendation for valor, tons of experience, and a promotion to squadron leader during the conflict. Also occurring at this time was the start of the Purge, and when he was 29 Jay was rotated in to assist. Harper could hardly contribute though, as he was shot down early on by a stray RPG from rebellious gang members. Forced to crash land, he was immediately captured and detained in a makeshift prison in the basement of an old industrial building.
The gang members that captured him contacted the Alliance in the hopes of making exchange of prisoners. Not only did the Alliance reject any proposal for trade, a rescue mission was never launched for the downed pilot. For about two years, Harper would go on to be starved and periodically tortured in the prison basement.
The first year of his imprisonment was considerably tolerable though, when fate provided him with a companion. Shortly after he arrived, another prisoner was placed in the a cell next to him. The makeshift concrete walls that divided the cells prohibited Jay from ever seeing his prison mate, but the two were able to talk to pass the time. After some small talk and careful conversations, both men began to open up to each other when they confirmed it wasn't a trick by the gang members. With time on their hands and both in the same predicament, Jay opened up to someone for the first time in his life, detailing everything for the mysterious old man. Jason didn't learn much about the old man, as he seemed to dodge questions or deflect the conversation in a different direction whenever he was asked about his past. It didn't bother Harper much though, seeing that he preferred to talk most of the time. Jay would later characterize the relationship as that of a sinner giving confession to a priest, dumping his life problems onto another. His relationship, the lack of a proper name given, and the grandiose manner in which his new companion spoke, Harper affectionately nicknamed the mysterious old man "Priest".
The Priest was not as strong as the youthful pilot, and months of starvation and torture quickly took a toll on him. In his waning hours, the old man broke down and begin to delve into his own life. To show his appreciation for Jay's company in the last chapter of his life, the old man begin to tell stories and the legend of a particularly famous outlaw. He detailed a life of adventure and fortune, eventually confessing to the crimes he colorfully depicted. He explained that despite all his success, no one would ever go on to carry his legacy, nor have anyone to care for his inevitable passing. The relationship more like a father and son now, the mysterious old man provided him with the knowledge and direction he would need to start an entirely new life with a new identity. Along with general advice and detailed guidance, the Preist also taught Harper how to become a better observer, liar, and scheming mastermind. To properly retain all this information, Harper was provided with drills that would help him remember everything that was discussed. Weeks and months of practice, finally guaranteed retention; a wealth of knowledge would be a key reason for Harper's eventual success. About a year into his internment now, Jay lost his friend to sickness and old age.
The following year would be complete torture for Harper. Often forgotten about for days on end, he begin to experience true abandonment and desperation. It was during this time that he started to get desperate, slipping into an insanity that conjured up people for company. Certainly the darkest and lowest point in his life, this was the second near death experience before his sudden release.
The end of the Purge marked a new chapter in Jay Harper's life. Taking the knowledge and guidance of his friend from prison, Jay set out to properly assume the role of the legendary outlaw's life. Isolation ironically cured the loneliness and emptiness he felt earlier in life; it was during his time of torture and imprisonment that he realized that he would only be able to survive if he solely relied on himself. His years of imprisonment was a clear indicator to Jay that the Alliance military was not the family he one envisioned for himself. They abandoned him when he needed them the most. It would be this key betrayal that further solidified his changed life into self-reliance, as well a radically different outlook on life that created his rebellious and carefree attitude.
Although he swore to change his personal philosophies, Harper understood the importance of resources and allies. Towards the end of his days with the Priest, he learned about allies and locations he could use as his startup. With a convincing swagger and the knowledge of a legendary outlaw tucked in his belt, Harper muscled his way into the criminal underworld.
One of many notable blunders during Harper's rise was his inability to properly gather specific information from one particularly savvy old man. Coincidentally the First Mate of the Priest, he was not easily fooled by Harper's declaration as the legendary outlaw when they first met. A quick scuffle and at gunpoint a few minutes later, Jay began to delve into key details of the Priest's outlaw life, too specific for anyone to casually know about. Now, convinced that he actually met his old friend and captain, the First Mate was beginning to realize why the Priest chose to to pass on his legacy to Harper. Appreciating the tenacity of the new Outlaw, the First Mate decided to honor the memory of his fallen captain by agreeing to help Harper track down the basic essentials of a criminal life (the legendary ship, weapons, and gear). For two years, he also passed on his own knowledge to Jay as they worked together to get things started. With the First Mate's eventual passing, Jay was left to continue a legacy in his own way.
Now, equipped with a skeleton crew, ship, and the right gear and weapons, Jay was ready to write the next chapter for the legend of the Outlaw and for the next 10 years later, successfully did so. Now in the present, Jay Harper has a wealth of experience, knowledge, and connections at his disposal. After several successful robberies and heists, a recent shuffling of personnel led to a the recent reduction of crew once more.
Still insatiable of fame, wealth, and adventure, Jay Harper now seeks out new crew members that are as crazy and as imaginative as he is. He will need to find the right set of skills in people quickly, so that he can start planning the next big score...ROLEPLAY SAMPLE

"
-"I Ain't Got Nothing But the Blues", Ella FitzgeraldLike a needle stuck on the same groove of a record, Jay could never seem to pull himself away from the Alliance. Once again, he found himself sitting opposite to an investigative officer in a sterile and bare interrogation room. As the officer combed through her report on her tablet, Jay was slouched in his chair, growing impatient of the formalities.
"You guys seriously need to call in a decorator" Jay joked, breaking the silence. "I mean it's just... awful in here. Why don't you guys get a carpet? Something to pull the room together, you know?"
"Because blood is hard to clean off carpets" the officer snapped back, her gaze unbroken from the tablet. Harper smiled. He was going to have fun with this one.
After several more minutes of silence the officer sighed, signaling the start of the conversation. "To be frank, Mr. Harper, I'm not entirely sure what to do with you."
"Not the first time a woman's said that..." Jay muttered.
"Burned fingertips and DNA tampering seemed like our only issue at first, but there's absolutely no hits of you on any current database. Jay Harper doesn't exist, least not any living ones. The only records that we can confirm..." the officer said, raising her tablet, "...is your criminal record. Everything from arson, to theft, bribery, public... indecency... The list goes on and on"
"Almost sounds like I'm compensating for something, eh luv?" Jay snickered. The officer was not amused. It was unsettling that Jay was so calm.
"Mr. Harper are you going to take this seriously or--"
"How long have you been with the Alliance luv?"
"Excuse me?"
"How long?"
"That is none of your business."
"You're way to polite to be Alliance, see. So I'm guessing you have to be new."
"You don't know anything about me" the officer hissed.
"I know that you work too hard, you're getting bags under them eyes" Harper reported, leaning in and pointing as he spoke. "Your knuckles and fingers are worn and bruised...so obviously a competent fighter. Although you probably favor your right-side too much and swinging improperly, which is why you touch your shoulder often from the pain. Why do you work so hard, luv? Doesn't daddy pay for everyth--"
"Shut! Up!" the officer shouted, slamming her tablet on the table. It was then that Jay knew he had her.
"...and daddy issues, apparently.." he boldly muttered. He cleared his throat and continued, "Listen uh, Agent Carter was it? I didn't mean anything by it. I just think you're way in over your head is all. The fact that you need to read up on me means you know nothing about me."
Agent Carter raised her eyebrow with curiosity. "Well then enlighten me" she responded flatly.
Jay cleared his throat and leaned back in his chair, waving his arms around as he spoke. Now that his baiting worked, it was time drop some truth on the greenhorn. "You see, the Alliance can't just lock me up and throw away the key, although they'd probably love to... I know too much. About everyone. About everything. There's too many dots out there in the 'verse that need connectin'. You see, your first problem was this little, bad-cop routine. It just wastes time. We both know you can't do anything, not until the big cheese shows up."
As he finished his sentence the facility slammed into Emergency Mode, automatically dimming the lights to make way for a flashing red one. Accompanied by the light show was the droning of automated warning messages.
"...Your second problem was sending out a wave, reporting the capture of Jay Harper" he continued. "The Alliance may want me, but there are plenty of people out there that want me more."Carter leaped into action, pulling her sidearm out and taking a defensive position by the door. Through her headset, she repeatedly called for assistance and an update. It was utter chaos.
Carter quickly spun around at glared at Harper with confusion. "Who the hell are you?"
A smirk slowly spread across Jay's face.

Anything else: There are a lot of sources of inspiration I pulled from when I was drafting this character. I've consistently noticed a unique type of character in films, tv, and books. The kind of characters that are often the guide through an otherwise complex story. It grants these characters with enough knowledge to explain through the oftentimes confusing events in a plot. Characters that come to mind include Gandalf from LOTR, Morpheus from the Matrix, or Jack Sparrow from POTC. All of these characters are usually the driving force or guide in stories, but never the main character. I wanted to create such a unique character, here on DoS.
If anything, I just wanted to reassure that this character will not be RPed in an OP manner. To offset his positives, I've provided plenty of flaws coupled with a troubling and blistered past. I've had extensive conversations with Roger, to ensure to everyone that my approach is sincere. If and when this app ever gets approved, let me know what you think! I've decided to start a new ship with a skeleton crew, who already have some experience with Harper. The rest of the crew will be RPed in.
