Vincent Marius Devanthal
"For six long years I've been in trouble
No pleasures here on earth I found
For in this world I'm bound to ramble
I have no friends to help me now. "
------------------------------------------------------
Full Name - Vincent Marius Devanthal
Nicknames/Alias - Vince, Doc
Age - 29
Date of Birth - April First
Gender - Male
Sexual Orientation - Heterosexual
Affiliation - Independence
Occupation - Street Doctor
Play-By - Tom Hiddleston
Build - Tall and lean
Height & Weight - 6ft 2 in, 170 lbs
Hair - Rich brown hair is long, just an inch or two from his shoulders, and is usually combed back
Eyes - Technically a light green, they seem to change colors depending on what he is wearing and his surroundings
Unique Features - Scars on his left side and stomach from stab wounds received while in prison
Dressing Style - Vincent likes to dress in a casual, but not sloppy manner. Simple button-downs, usually with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows...simple work slacks... and shoes or boots as needed. Style never really was his concern
Other - anything else you'd like to add? Vincent is left handed. He also has a hint of brogue to his tone, as though that frontier twang didn't give his words color enough
Likes - Helping people, saving lives, country music, the smell of a farm, honest folk, playing the guitar
Dislikes - Lying, feeling helpless, people in charge ignoring people in need, bureacracy, people taking advantage of others, techno music
Quirks/Habits -When he is working on a patient with a serious wound, he becomes incredibly focused and clinical, quite a change from usually laid back demeanor.
Fears - That, at the end of it all, he'll be judged for the lives he failed to save and not those that he did save
Secrets - He remembers the face of every person he failed to save. They come back to him in his dreams
Strengths -
- Medical Training - Vincent has all manner of experience in tending to man and beast. He showed a strong interest in the veterinarian's work when he came to see the family's head of cattle, horses, and other beasts when he was five. By the time he was ten, he was acting vet for his ranch and both neighbors. Just before he enlisted at 17, he'd been assisting the town doctor, so serving as a combat medic for the Alliance was a given. Between training and the many opportunities for on-hand trauma medicine during the war, he knows how to piece people back up better than most know how to put a wardrobe together.
- Faith - Raised out in the country on Shadow, Faith was prevalent in his life. When it became apparent that Vince had a skill in healing, it was claimed to be a God-given gift, one that he felt it was his duty to share. He's not one to thump someone over the head with the good book. Truly, he's a live and let live kind of soul, but his Faith is rock-solid and it lends to him a quiet, humble resolve.
- Hard Worker - Vince was raised on a ranch. Everyone pulled their weight and did their part to help the ranch and their neighbors. He's an early riser with a work ethic that would likely kill a lesser man.
Weaknesses - [At least 3]
- Lost Causes - Vince is a sucker for them. You'll never find him giving up on someone if they are on his operating table. He understands triage, understands the logic that some people just can't be saved... but his heart just won't let him accept it. This goes for a lot of other situations too. He's not one to give up on people, even if they've given up on themselves. It's caused him no small amount of pain in the past.
- Trusting - Despite his experiences after the war, Vince believes that people, as a whole, are good. He's the first one to give somebody the benefit of the doubt and he'll take your word at face value. It's let others take advantage of his good will and nature in the past.
- Protective - If he sees someone in trouble, being taken advantage of, or otherwise troubled, he can't just pass by and let it happen. He has to intervene and try to help the little guy.
Talents/Special Abilities -
- Medical Care
- Knives
- Playing Guitar
Aspirations - Open up a legitimate practice one day, providing pro bono services to Rim world settlers
Overall Personality - Vincent is a country boy, through and through. Underneath his laid-back, good-natured attitude and ready humor is an intensely driven soul. He's trusting of others and would give the shirt off his back to someone in need, epitomizing the "good ole boy" ideal. He'll tell you what he feels, straight and to the point, and he'll bust you with a good-natured ribbing if it's deserved. Though he takes his vow of "do no harm" seriously, he understands that there are regrettable circumstances where it must be done. He'll have your back in a fight and he's not one to sit quiet when an injustice occurs. Stubborn and willful, his own personal code of morality has caused him some hardship in the past, especially with the Alliance.
He truly loves helping people and seems at peace most when he's either behind a medical mask or strumming his guitar. He's got a positive, gentle bedside manner when working with patients, unless a life is on the line. Then he is quietly tense and efficient, readily chewing someone out handily if they interfere with his work. He's not one to hold a grudge and though he can have a mighty temper when properly provoked, it cools down just as quick.

Your History - Borne on April Fools Day, 2490, Vincent Marius Devanthal is the oldest of 6 siblings. He was borne to Thomas and Mary Sue Devanthal on their ranch on Dyton. From a young age, he showed an affinity for medicine and the healing arts. When he was five, he was terribly inquisitive about the work the town veterinarian was doing when he came to tend to the family's livestock and other animals. By the time he was ten, he was acting as the family veterinarian for most of their needs, as well as all their neighbors within riding distance. He'd surpassed the town vet's knowledge by the time he was a teen. His parents, seeing his gift, started sending him into town to learn from the physician. By the time the war kicked off, he was acting as the man's assistant, even doing minor surgery.
Hearing about the fighting going on with the War, Vince felt the need to help. Feeling that the division between people was the root of the problem, he enlisted with the Alliance, believing that Unification would help everyone. It wasn't a surprise to anyone that he chose to be a combat medic. The next four years, the last of the war, were a trial for Vincent. He was good at his job. His command saw that in the way he handled himself on the battlefield and the lives he was able to save. Plans were even in the works to fast track him into a physician's assistant course and give him his commission. Unfortunately, not all kosher with Vincent.
When it came to wounded, Vincent refused to see uniforms. He only saw patients. He was verbally dressed down and written up on several occasions for providing medical care to wounded Independent combatants. Over time, the consistent disregard that Alliance command gave to wounded Independents grated on him and he made his opinions known, only to have his career future threatened if he acted insubordinate.
Things finally came to a head during the Battle of Serenity Valley. Those weeks were hell and Vincent was always on the front lines, dragging back wounded and tending to them. On more than one occasion, he came across wounded Independents too. Against orders, he'd patch them up as best he could and move on. When the Independents finally surrendered, he thought that, at last, things could start to mend. Knowing about the grievous casualties suffered on all sides, he asked his commanding officer when they were going to be sending medical support to aid the wounded.
His CO laughed in his face and made it clear that the brass had no intent to provide aid to the ailing rebels, no matter that they'd finally given in. He was then dismissed from the man's presence. Such disregard was something Vincent simply could not abide. Stripping the patches from his uniform, he stole into the medical facility and loaded up as many supplies as he could possibly carry.
Slipping through the front lines, he went over to the Independent side and began to treat the wounded where he could, stretching the supplies as far as possible. The sheer number of casualties astounded him. One of the worst was a man, a Major by the name of Bainbridge, he'd come upon him after hearing a soldier calling for a medic. He'd been injured while running in under withering enemy fired to save one of his men. With a nearly non-existent knee, a nasty gut wound, and a through and through shot to the shoulder, he didn't look good. Vincent did all he could to stop the bleeding in the leg and salvage it so he could keep walking on it. Dancing, maybe not. The gut wound was nasty, but the innards were in surprisingly good shape. With the Independent soldier's help, he patched what he could, he managed to put them back in and seal it up so they'd stay there before bandaging that shoulder and running a needle decompression to keep him from losing the ability to breathe. The man drifted in and out of consciousness, but was never coherent. Once he was as stable as he could make him, Vince gave the soldier what few antibiotics and other supplies he could spare to try and help the man pull through and moved on.
He kept doing this until the inevitable happened: he ran out of supplies. Lacking other options, he tried to get back through the lines and get more. Unfortunately, he was caught. His commanding officer was so angry, he tried to have him summarily court-martialed for treason. If it wasn't for Vincent's track record as a medic, he might have been executed. Fortunately for him, those who presided over the court-martial proceedings knew of his record (he'd even saved the leg of one of them). When all was said and done, he was found guilty of disobeying a direct order and assisting the enemy. Because of his service to the Alliance, however, they gave him the minimum time possible: ten years incarceration and a dishonorable discharge.
Prison life wasn't kindest life for Vincent. It may have held the dregs and criminals of the Alliance military, but they still saw him as a traitor. Someone tried to take his life three times. The third time, they almost succeeded. He wound up having to kill his attacker, but not before getting shanked twice in the gut. His saving grace was being sent to the infirmary. He was sequestered in a secure portion of the infirmary while he recovered. While there, he began to make friends with the prison physician. After he was healed, the physician pulled strings to get his work shift moved to help with him. His skills became very valuable to the overworked man, who began helping Vince learn even more about medicine, surgery, and pharmacology.
Vince served his time and was discharged after five years due to good behavior. Needing a new start, he managed to scrounge up passage to Beylix. Due to his record, he couldn't perform medicine legally, but there were plenty of people who needed it and were willing to overlook such things. He never asked for much, but word of his abilities began to spread and it wasn't long before he was spending a good amount of time acting as a street doctor for the cities less-privileged citizens and those passing through. It only became more prevalent now that the unrest has broken out fully thanks to the Signal.

Roleplay Example - "Doc, we got another one coming in!" One of Vince's helpers called out to him from the other room. Vince was standing in front of a small sink in a beaten, worn out little room. It looked like the room's better days had been two decades ago, save for three key items. The sink, the operating table, and the supply cabinet were pristine.
His hands made quick, efficient motions as he scrubbed his hands clean and prepped. Once complete, he pulled on a set of gloves and moved his mask from around his neck to over his mouth and nose, hooking it behind his ears. "Bring him in, Jim. Give me the rundown."
"Blast victim. Civilian. Looks like he got caught in a cross fire. Right arm is gone to the elbow, shrapnel wounds and burns to the torso and side. He's unconscious with weak, panting breaths. Looks to be distension in the chest, maybe a collapsed lung? We still have radial pulse, but it's rapid and weak."
"Evidence of fire inhalation?" Vince's voice had already become monotone as he felt himself dropping into the "zone" that he worked at in trauma scenarios. Hearing a negative, he nodded almost absently before looking up as the patient was carted in. The green of the scrubs he wore made his eyes brilliant and intense. "Let's get to work."
