Operative Theta
"Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side a terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know"
------------------------------------------------------
Full Name - None (Classified true name documents destroyed upon successful completion of the Program)
Nicknames/Alias - "Theta" (A remnant of selection and training he endured to become an Operative. The Greek letter was a method for tracking the candidates through the process. He chose it to give the crew of Penumbra Dawn something easier to call him when he interacts with them. In communications to Penumbra Dawn, he identifies himself with the following symbol: Θ)
Age - Classified (appears to be 35)
Date of Birth - Unknown (If he decides to give someone a date, he usually gives December 25th. The odds of this being his actual birth date are non-existent.)
Gender - Male
Sexual Orientation - Heterosexual
Affiliation - Alliance
Occupation - Operative
Play-By - Michael Fassbender
Build - Wiry
Height & Weight - 5 ft 11 in, 170lbs
Hair - light brown, usually cropped professionally short
Eyes - gray-blue on the left, hazel on the right
Unique Features - He has no particularly notable markings, save for the heterochromia of his eyes. When conducting an operation, he often wears contacts to hide this abnormality. Other than his eyes, he's almost unusually average. Average height, slightly below average weight, no noticeable features...he blends into crowds extremely well.
Dressing Style - Theta dresses in very unassuming clothes, usually casual: simple slacks and button-down shirts or tunics that allow for ease of movement. Depending on the mission or what he is doing, he also wears simple, but fashionable suits that make him look good without drawing attention to himself. If situations are tactical, he'll adopt the proper gear for it.
Other - Theta has a very exact way of speaking. While he can be long winded, his words are very proper and he never uses contractions.
Likes - The Alliance, learning things, getting information from others, security, order, completing his missions, orchestral music
Dislikes - Independents, criminals, ignorant people, chaos, people impeding his mission, smokers, public intoxication, lazy speech, lazy people, arrogant people, impulsive people, being questioned
Quirks/Habits - Except in certain tactical situations where speed of communication is absolutely necessary, his precise manner of speaking causes him to pause and consider his words before stating them. This isn't an obviously long pause, but a perceptive person will pick it up. For the most part, he remains very aloof around people and does not bring people in. He is not the comforting sort and will be noticeably agitated if in a situation where one would normally comfort another. While he will look into a person's eyes, his attention is usually on the triangle area formed by the points of a person's nose and their shoulders. This allows him to pick up micro expressions on their facial features as well as any broadcasts of their intent to move....either to flee or to attack him. He keeps his hands close to his body and does not generally touch others, save for during combat or when handling somone he is getting information from.
Fears - Failing mission and being unable to protect the necessary secrets of the Alliance, thereby allowing another Miranda incident.
Secrets - Everything the Alliance has entrusted him with keeping. Despite his exceptional social skills and talents for getting information from people, he's surprisingly poor at talking to women. He can keep a conversation well, but his ability to flirt is ludicrously bad. He has taken to simply "purchasing" companionship when he feels the need or when an operation requires it.
Strengths -
True Believer - He's been indoctrinated from a very young age in the sanctity of the Alliance and that people such as himself are necessary to do the dark and dirty things that cannot blemish the record of the Alliance. His faith borders on fanaticism and allows him to justify any of his actions.
Near Limitless Resources - He is an Operative. His position affords him the latitude to call upon resources of the Alliance as he sees fit and he is allowed to act with almost no oversight.
Intelligent - Theta is extremely intelligent and the training and indoctrination program he went through provided a rigorous, in-depth education that focused on critical thinking. He is well-versed and conversant in many topics in the 'Verse, adding to his ability to go almost anywhere and blend in.
Thinks Sideways - Theta never attacks things straight on. He's been trained to think outside of the box, analyze all aspects of a situation, and to come at problems sideways, where they aren't expecting and are weakest.
Attention to Detail - Theta is very observant of the world around him, paying attention to the minute details. He links things together and does not dismiss things out of hand unless they obviously do not pertain to whatever he is doing. He will remember even the minor things about a person, like the watch they wore, the scent of a woman's perfume, or the nervous tic of a person.
Weaknesses -
Ranged Weapons - While Theta is trained and familiar with a variety of weapons that may become an operational necessity, he is only of average proficiency with them. This includes any distance farther than he can throw something. He only trains enough to pass mandatory Alliance proficiency checks and will find himself at a disadvantage if forced into a prolonged firefight where he cannot get closer to the enemy.
Cognitive Dissonance - His belief in the Alliance and that all actions it takes are necessary is part of his drive and strength, but it can also be a weakness as well. He is normally quick to adapt to situations, except when it deals with things that argue against his belief. When he is presented with things that paint the Alliance in unpleasantly (Miranda, for example) it conflicts with his belief...keeping him unsettled, compromising his ability to react and act as he normally would. This continues until he develops a rationalization and a way to explain away what he's been shown. It severely hinders his ability to process information and deal with non-life threatening situations until he's been able re-affirm his belief structure.
Obsessive-Compulsive - Theta is very obsessive-compulsive. His cannot stand disorder, especially amongst his own things. His room, for example, is meticulous; the bed is always made as soon as he leaves it, down to tight hospital corners. Everything has its place and he cannot stand things being out of order. Even when he is interrogating individuals and things get messy, he will continually be cleaning up while he questions them. He cannot function until his personal areas are up to his immaculate standards. Other than in these areas, many of his symptoms are purely obsessional and are linked to why he does not make friends or easily socialize with others, even the Penumbra Dawn crew. His obsession is with his work and completing his mission. Being overly social with others, to him, creates a potential risk and chance for emotional compromise that may undermine his mission.
Emotionally Distant - While Theta is fully trained and capable of making acquaintances easily and disarming them socially, he only does so for operational reasons. In simple social situations dealing with long-term interactions with people on a personal level, it becomes apparent that all of his social skills are just that: skills. He hasn't ever tried to really get to know someone on a personal level. This distance can start to unsettle people after a long time as it appears he is simply using them for information and is not investing anything personal into them.
Talents/Special Abilities -
Melee/Hand-to-Hand Combat - Theta is lethal at close range. He practices a form of hand to hand combat specific to Operatives. It combines the most useful areas of separate martial branches and distills it down into a streamlined, effective combative system for all engagements, including non-standard combat with makeshift melee weapons. If you are within reach of him, you are in trouble.
Information Gathering - Theta is well trained in getting people to tell him what he wants to know. He's as equally capable of getting information from unwitting targets via conversation and social engineering as he is of applying the proper amount of pain to physically coerce someone to tell what they know.
The Gray Man - He is exceptionally good at blending into a crowd and being unobtrusive. Like a form of social stealth, he can observe a situation and seamlessly fit himself into it and make it seem as though he has always belonged there, affecting mannerisms and the look exceptionally well. This does not, however include speech. This chameleon-like social presence has proven invaluable in his duties.
Aspirations - To make the galaxy a better place, even if he is the monster that has no place there.
Overall Personality - Theta is single-minded and focused on his tasks as an operative. He has no problem with killing as a part of his job, be it by his own hand or by ordering others to do it. He doesn't have a compulsion about killing anyone, even women and children, so long as he determines that it is necessary to complete his mission. This is due to his strong believe in the greater good and his ideal of the Alliance leading the way to a better reality. He is a true believer and that belief is the source of his strength and determination. It can also be his Achilles' heel when something rises to bring that belief into question.
Theta is very courteous and soft-spoken in manner. He has a very precise way of speaking and takes his time in responding to others, rarely speaking an errant word. While he can be very engaging and disarming socially, this is only for operational requirements. During long-term interactions that aren't part of a mission, however, he proves to be distant, preferring to remain emotionally distant and uninvested so that distractions do not affect his work.
Highly intelligent, he is very meticulous in how he deals with things and his personal areas are always meticulous clean and organized due to his obsessive nature. He is the epitome of discipline and is very methodical. This does not, however, mean that he is by the book. Quite the opposite. He prefers to approach situations from an unexpected angle so as to have the most advantage.
He harbors an almost clinical fascination with his work as an interrogator. It was part of the reason why he had his chambers made there, within the interrogation suite that he had put into the Penumbra Dawn. He preferred to remain close to his subjects and, like with anything dealing with his work, he has a single-minded fascination for.

Your History - Much of Theta's past, before becoming part of the program, is unknown to all but a very select few. Those records held the identity of his parents and of the one recorded sibling that he was known to have. What he remembers is little. He remembers having parents, though he was only four when they left his life. He cannot remember why. One moment, he remembers having the fuzzy faces of that pair and indistinct memories of time spent with them and his sister, who was only one at the time. Then...they were gone. He and his sister were put into the Alliance system as orphans. Part of that was standard tests for genetic markers, aptitude, mental acuity.
The tests came back with very high probability markers, enough that top Alliance brass took notice. He was chosen for the Program, the training and indoctrination system that developed the most elite, classified agents of Alliance power, the Operatives. He was removed from standard federal custody and immediately brought in. His records were sealed away. His sister was taken as well, but not for the program. Her whereabouts disappeared in secrecy.
Assigned the identifier Theta, he was immediately enrolled. The Program chose applicable candidates from a young age, preferring them to be from the ages of five or younger and having minimal familial ties. Orphans like Theta and his sister were always preferred. There were less loose ends...less chance of family attempting to track them down.
The curriculum of the Program was highly advanced, designed to train the mind as well as the body to their highest potential. They were to be the scalpels, the fine tools for cutting the cancer of dissent and compromised secrets from the 'Verse. The core of the training included layers of indoctrination to ensure perfect clarity of the Alliance vision and faith in the order that the Alliance provides. Their faith was bound to the government. Politics, art, history, etiquette, the sciences, philosophy, psychology, sociology, mathematics, language...the scholarly side of the training was varied in order to prepare them for whatever social situations they may come across. Athletics were important as well, running, acrobatics, calisthenics, they were put on a strict regimen of training to hone their body and reflexes.
By the time they were ten, their training was supplemented with more operationally viable pursuits. Combat training began in earnest, beginning with unarmed combat in order to hone reflexes and enhance discipline. Intelligence gathering, analysis, and subterfuge was added as well. By the time they reached thirteen, combat training had advanced to melee weapons and basic marksmanship. Stealth, social engineering, and interrogation became a focus as well. It was here that Theta found his first shortcoming. While he had been fond of both unarmed combat and melee, he found that he was only marginally decent when it came to firearms. He understood their workings...could strip them down, clean them, and put them back together, but he had not taste or care for the finer points of marksmanship, especially at range. Some of it was preference and due to the obsessive-compulsive personality he'd begun to exhibit. He didn't enjoy being far away from the action...from his target. He preferred to be up close and always chose to work scenarios in such a manner that he could indulge his preferences. Being up close meant that he could ensure that things were done right and nothing was left to chance or out of place. He could hardly abide that.
Certain neurosis was not uncommon upon the Program candidates. Their high intelligence, coupled with their extensive, accelerated training program and indoctrination tended to highlight or exacerbate such tendencies. As they were trained to be the most efficient killers in the 'Verse, a certain level or neurosis and heightened characteristics for sociopathic tendencies were not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, they were approved because it helped the candidates in their ability to fulfill the tasks necessary as an Operative. All things, however, had to be in moderation. The Program wasn't in the business of creating the perfect serial killer or mass murderer. No, they were in the business of creating a tool that, when necessary, could perform those things for the greater good.
By eighteen they had progressed to advanced combat, working with non-standard and makeshift weapons, advanced marksmanship, and cover work. Again, Theta did well enough to pass training and qualifications in his required firearms marksmanship; the strength of his unarmed and melee skills and his ability to blend into situations shored up this weakness. Still, it would be another six years before he was finally deemed a success and completed the Program. Upon his completion, all of his records were wiped from the system. The only remaining copy was eyes only knowledge given to key members of Parliament. His sister had become a distant dream. When asked, he was told that she had been sent to a private boarding school where she was well taken care of. Her identity and her whereabouts, he was told, could not be given to him because of the sensitive, classified nature of his work. If a link was ever made between them, it would put her in danger.
To him, that made perfect sense.
He spent the first two years working to try and root out the leaders of the Browncoats in the last years of the Unification War. For him and those like him, they were ghosts, stories made to cause the Independents to whisper in fear. Thanks, in part, to the intelligence that he and those like him garnered and the blood they shed, the war finally came to an end. Though his targets changed, his job never did...hunt down and destroy the most dangerous, insidious threats to the Alliance. Through smiles and feigned friendship, through subterfuge and torture, and through death, he did his work and did it with pride as he sought to realize the end goal.
A better world. All of them, better worlds.
It was unfortunate that, in the end, one of their own broke their pact and betrayed the very institution that had made them what they were. They were fortunate that the Blue Sun Corporation was able to help leverage its own assets alongside the government to quell things as much as they had. This betrayal became Theta's new target. Due to his record for success and thorough completion of his tasks, he was assigned to deal with his brother Operative. One of the newest ships of the fleet, a small, but powerful frigate christened IAV Penumbra Dawn was assigned to him. He had it refitted to his specifications.
A year later, his mission finally reached its end. Theta's record remained unblemished, though this may have been the first mission that he had found little to no pleasure in completing.
Now, he travels with the Penumbra Dawn, largely allowing them to operate as per normal while he hunts for leads for others deemed extremely dangerous to the state.

"Mister Craig, I apologize for the manner with which you came to meet with me. However, your cooperation is paramount for events to move along in a mutually beneficial manner. You do understand that, do you not, Mister Craig?" Theta spoke, his tone even and soft, hearkening to that of one amiable acquaintance chatting with another.
Meanwhile, Farren Craig sat there in the clinically sterile chair that was the centerpiece of Theta's interrogation suite on the IAV Penumbra Dawn. He had woken up there after finding himself on the bad end of flash bomb that had disabled him enough for the Alliance commando team to drug and bind him for extraction. Other than the fuzzy pounding in his head, the man was in remarkably good shape. Of course, that didn't account for the steel bindings about his wrists and the matching ones on his ankles. He was looking at Theta with wild, frightened eyes, turning his head as far as he could before the Operative moved behind the chair and out of his vision. "What do you want? Why have you taken me? I have rights, you know!"
"Indeed you do, Mister Craig, and you are right to enquire about those rights. I assure you, I mean you no harm. Think of this as a...precautionary measure. It is for your safety as much as mine. All I require are the answers to a few, simple questions, Mister Craig. Once I have that, you will be on your way and well compensated for your inconvenience."
"What do you want to know? I know nothing!" Farren struggled against his bonds, testing the futility of the attempt as his mind whirled, trying to figure some way out of this. He could feel that they were on a ship.
"I highly doubt that, Mister Craig. A man of your years and experience has much knowledge to share." Theta came back around within view. He had a folder in his hands and was flipping through the pages. Like the reading glasses he wore, it was an affectation. He knew the contents of the file backwards and forward. It was a ploy...both to make himself seem less threatening and more trustworthy. The file also helped to dissuade lying, as it made the Alliance man seem far more scholarly and knowledgeable. Farren couldn't know what was or was not in that folder after all.
Looking up, Theta shot a gaze over the rim of those glasses at his "guest" once more. "For example, Mister Craig, I have heard that there is a cell of Dust Devil terrorists helping to foment unrest on Beylix. What, praytell, do you know about them?"
At that question, Farren stilled, his eyes narrowing. "You'll learn nothing from me, Purple-Belly swine. You may as well kill me now.
Theta sighed, closing the folder and setting it aside. He removed his glasses, very carefully folding them and tucking them into a pocket. "That, Mister Craig, is rather unfortunate to hear. I am afraid that your death does me little good. Your life, however, is very valuable to me. In time...well, in time you will understand that cooperation is your best option."
From outside the door to the interrogation suite, the marines guarding the detention area started and looked at each other, blanching a bit as the screams began.
