Your History - Jax came from nothing, but I am sure we have all heard that sob story before. His mother and father with normal working stiffs and Jax hated them for it. He started young reading books about epic space adventures. Living on a war torn Athena, morning books were far better than the afternoon bombings. As he grew to the ripe old age of 15 his hate for his deadbeat parents, high winds, and the Alliance over flowed and he made his plans to abandon planet. He saved every dime he made form after school jobs and even pawned some stuff from his folks,he was on the first thing off world.
His ride ended at Beradette, with little cash left to him it was time to make some real decisions real fast. First place he stopped looked like a marketplace to him. Standing there with fresh space dust still on his boot Jax was trying to figure out his next move when some rough looking men walked up to him talking real fast asking him a bunch of different stuff from all angles trying to get him to follow them. When a man sharply dressed man cut them off and showed them away. "You new to the planet kid" the man said.
"Is it that obvious"
"Yeah, when did you get here"
"Today. well about an hour ago" Jax admitted
The man smiled and put his arm around Jax "Come with me son we will take care of you" for some odd reason Jax trusted him and if you knew Jax at all that would amaze you. What he didn't know at the time was that Sid just saved him from becoming a slave but not from living on the run.
A few years later Jax found himself tearing apart ships in Sid's chop shop and for the first time in his life he enjoyed waking up in the morning. Sid put him on one or his many crews headed up by a mountain of a man named Alec who loved working out as much if not more than making money. Because of Jackson's natural build Alec was always getting him to work out with. After awhile Jax loved it just as much but more for how it made him look in a mirror. When Jax first got to Alec's crew Alec put him with a old man named Johna who was the navigation and communication expert. Alec put him with Johna cause Alec wanted a replacement for the old man. Jackson immediately found something he had a knack for. The idea of bring a ship in and completely glassing the old nav. system, registration, and anything that would electronically id the ship as the old one, then rebuilding it from the ground up to make it all legal, that was amazing to Jax. When Alec saw that Jax had and interest in he not only encouraged it but pushed him towards it.
A few months went by well more like a year his training was going well on all fronts, Jax was settling in to a routine. Work, working out, and tending his garden. Yes his garden as much as he didn't like to talk about it the things he learned for his working stiff parents he realized that eat flavored protein every day was getting old. By convening Alec that real food was better for his body that the porting bs he was eating easily allowed him time and a plot for some real veggies. One day while working out with Alec, Alec asked him about his training how it was going and how he liked it. "It's going great boss, I mean i cant believe y'all let met do this every day and call it work. I guess its true what they say 'when you enjoy what you do it's not much like work'" Jax breathed out in between reps.
"Glad to hear it Jax, so you think your ready for the show. Cause Sid has a guy who is putting together a new crew young like you but real head strong. He's looking for a glasser like you and i have truly talked you up to Sid. He wants to put you on a few jobs to see how you do before he puts you on a new crew" Jax's was so socked he about drooped the bar on his chest. Catching the bar and placing it back on the rack he jumped up "really, really your kidding right"
"No, Jax i am not kidding. I am dead serious. Now listen to me Jax don't screw around with this one. Sid is looking for someone he can count on and I assured him you were that guy" As Alec continued to threaten, Jax was doing his best to wipe the la shi eaten gren of his face.
"Cause I swear of you mess this up and get shipped back to me the only thing you will be useful for is tending that damn garden of yours" even though Alec was dead serious about all his threats even he couldn't help but be excited for Jax.
Jax arrived at Sid's shop were he soon realized this was way different that Alec's show. Everyone here was all business hardly any jokes were told, smiles cracked, or even slaps on the back. No it was wake up work , work and more work. If you weren't working you were brushing up on other skills. All in all Sid ran his shop like a machine and Jax could appreciate that. Jackson could also appreciate the smoking hot mechanic that Sid kept on his crew. Alice was a few years younger than Jackson but definitely didn't act lke it. She was one of the only people that would talk to Jackson outside of the job and for Jax it was love at frist sight. They began to see more and more of each other, every spare moment was spent in each others company.
As the days went by Jax preformed his task with the practiced precision of a man twice his age and experience living up to all the claims that Alec his former boss made of him. The challenge of wiping a ship of all of it identity, tearing through the firewalls, maneuvering trough back doors, trap doors and side stepping redundant loops got Jax's blood pumping. Setting up new id's for ships that were still in good enough shape to sell as whole was even better like Jax's always said "if a man can make it another man can fake it". After a few months Sid saw all he needed to see and Jackson was on his way to meet his new boss, the young strong headed Onas Knox and Jax quickly found out what 18hr days were like. If you feel bad for Jax don't, yeah he might of been worked like a slave but he was paid like a king.
Have you ever walked into your kitchen and opened up your refrigerator, even though, you knew what was in it? This is essentially what Grimm was doing with the Cortex. Going through database after database with no real change or update in the results. In years past, during the opening leg of the trip, Jax would be working the nav systems. Most of his work would be done at the barn, but what little he could do would be just about done by now. Then he would help the occupying team remove all they could manage. Normaly, you only had a few days to get a headstart on the op. Every ounce of a ship under Onas' shop was useable in one way or another. It just depended on the job, and how they were fencing the raw goods. For instance, if a ship was being lifted for parts, then his job was to scrubb the serial numbers and code traces. If the ship was being stolen for it's frame, it would be stripped of all essential componants, but left in prestien condition for refit. If it was for new parts, than this was more common.

One method of fencing stolen parts was buying an abondoned, or deadlined starship, and then stealing an identical vessel in good working order. In that case, both ships would be kept in fair order. Jackson's job was the hardest in those jobs, as he had to scrubb old codes, and graft the new numbers in. In the old days, like, centuries ago, these numbers were simply plates that were burned, stamped or bolted on. In modern times, it was done through thermal bonding. Kind of like a barcode fused into metal. That was what Jackson had to merge.
Today. It was this. Staring at a moniter with nothing on it. If this were a job, Onas would problebly beat him. He'd tell him to find the next mark or... Hey Jackson thought. Find the next mark. So Jackson went shopping. Diving into the docking manifests on Tiften, he turned his screens into a cataloge of profitable oppertunities. The shiniest one being a brand new Armitage class transport named Wonderland. Now at first glance this ship didn't seem like much ,but what it did boast was a state of the art fuel management system that would pay six months worth or wages for the whole crew.
"Well thats a gorram pipe dream," Jackson said aloud. Turning to look to see if Nick would chime in, Jax realized that his friend hadn't even noticed he said anything.
"Hey, buddy what you doin over there" he called to the back of Nick's head. No response was forthcoming.
"Nick, you alive over there," asked letting his voice rise, still no answer.
"Hey!!! Jackleg," Jackson was nearly screaming at the top of his lungs by now.
Nick started and the moved his hand to his left ear pulling out a small wireless ear bud. Turning to look at his large and very red faced friend who now sported a razor thin smile, that generally followed these types of embarsing moments.
"Sup dude, you need me or som'in," Nick asked.
Jackson just rolled his eyes.
"What you doing over there bud," Jax said as he moved towards the front of the bridge.
"Lisn'in ta som muzac bre, you," Nick replied kinda sleepily.
"Just sittin here somewhere between boredom and oblivion... Right, well I think i am going to leave all this exciting stuff to you sir and head to the galley to make some grub, if you get hungry come on down" Jax stated as he made his way to the door.
"That's was up, I'll be down in a few" Nick commented lazily as Jackson went out of site.
Making a stop by his room, Jackson grabbed his gun case and cleaning kit, and then continued on his way to the galley. He figured he'd kill the rest of the evening cleaning his new toy and cooking dinner for the crew. Walking into the galley, Jackson spotted Onas sitting at the table with his knife, appearing to have had the same idea that he did.
"You bored too boss..." Jackson asked announcing he presence.
Setting down his gun case and cleaning kit, Jax rounded the counter into the pantry, grabbing select vegetables. Next he went to the fridge and picked out some plump chicken protien stubs. Really, these didn't need to be refrigerated, but it was just Jax style. He felt that if you treated it like real food, it somehow enhanced the flavor. Jax continued his preperations as Nick entered the galley.
"Oh you ain't done yet? I thought it was grub time," Nick casually joked to Jackson.
"Things of this caliber take some time man," Jax said, pausing and jestureing with his knife, and joking back.
"I thought white boys got it done quick," Nick continued, pulling out a chair, turning a chair backwards and sitting at the table. He reached out and slid Onas' ashtray closer.
Jackson stopped what he was doing and turned towards Nick, "No... white boys get it done right, the first time, which is why it seems quick," he said, punctuating every point with his index finger.
"Oh so thats why you got all those leads on Kitty when I came up blank, right?" Nick quiped.
Jackson gripped his guts and stumbled back, "Low blow, it's a low blow!" They laughed and carried on for a bit, when the conversation took a turn.
"Onas," Nick said, "You think about what I said earlier? Bout the new pilot? Cause I've been thinkin," Nick started, ashing his cigar, "If we can find one, which, come on dawg, we can, there's so much oppertunity out there. And you remember that lil warehouse that's fer sale back on seph. We could... get a few gigs lined up..."
"You talkin bout openin another shop? Cause if you are, I kinda saw a lead on Santo. Got one of them hyped up TPI MOLY Base Fuel Management systems..." Jax chimed in.
"That's what I'm talkin bout Onkey. Dat's tha new new, and its right where we're goin." Nick said, gaining momentum. Both stared Onas near out of his seat, waiting for something.
