Overall Personality -
Now a woman like Lin holds a lot of pride about her. She maintains the ideal that she can take care of herself, and is pretty strong-willed and rebellious. Despite her rather nice upbringing on Sihnon, there is something of a border-girl in her-- wild and free. She ran the beautiful streets with her childhood friends, and got herself into all kinds of trouble. Nowdays she has some control, but is easily inspired to be rebellious in the face of oppression. Lin despises seeing the people around her stepped on by the big Alliance boot, and as such clearly no longer holds ties to the Core. Except her mother. The two have a strained relationship, but Vedette's daughter will always answer her waves, and there is a love between them, they're both just too stubborn to apologise for fighting prior to Lin leaving home. She is the type to never want to give up, and would sooner die than surrender most days. A quick wit and shrewd mind were clearly earned from her parentage, much to her chagrin, and this serves her pretty well when running her own business and organising trades with the rebels.

Your History -
The tech-savvy Lin Mei was born on Sihnon, although, her father hadn't exactly wanted to make an honest woman of the lovely companion Vedette Kai. No sir. This had not been some fairy-tale romance where the roguish Captain whisks the Companion off her feet and takes her away to be his forever more... blah blah blah. Though, it could be said that the young lady Kai had slipped from grace when she fell in with Nathan Hawkins; an aspiring young Alliance businessman. Some unorthodox whisking had occurred, but it hadn't ended how either had really planned. How did Vedette fall pregnant? Neither knew. Surely all Companions are trained to safeguard this, right? Surely Hawkins had been smart? Nope. Vedette turned into a pretty bitter woman following the day when Nathan disappeared at the first sign of daylight, and she had been left carrying his child. Of course, she left the Guild to raise the child, thinking it the right thing to do, but eventually resenting poor little Lin. Just a constant reminder of her failed life. Yet surely held some love for keeping her? Well, in her own way she did, and Lin had gotten all the care ever needed.
Lin's childhood had been high-class but colourful. Anywhere you went on Sihnon was beautiful, and to this day she still recalls the sight of home fondly. She was well-educated, she had friends. A number of childhood friends-- namely Logan Shepard and Suvi Petrova. This turned into Logan and Lin being something like childhood sweethearts that grew up to marry young. Lin held a love for the border worlds, and had always wanted to travel. Logan had always wanted them to move to Osiris, so he could continue his career in law enforcement. He wanted to be a Fed, and Lin wanted to fix up old ships. Oh yeah, that part. Lin's talents were in the area of mechanics, and she had a good affinity for the more vintage models. They have 'character', she claims, and always disliked the high-tech sheen of Alliance engineering, which had been where she'd started her training.
Lin has only met her father once, very briefly, and while he wasn't unkind, he found it hard to warm up to her. The businessman already had a family of his own-- much to her disappointment and attempt at soul-seeking. They parted ways on uneasy terms. Nathan having payed Lin off with what he assumed was money she thought she rightly deserved. Lin turned it down, gave the man a forced hug, and promised not to 'upset' his perfect little life no longer. She doesn't speak of him, nor does she ever plan to track him down again, but she kept the last name Hawkins, due to her believing she deserved that at the very least.
Despite all the intense fear Lin held for flying, she swallowed it as best she could and plucked up the courage for the border, whether Logan would come with her or not. He did, because he loved her, right? And yet... it didn't end so well. This wasn't where he wanted to be, and he'd given up his job just for this? There were too many differences between the pair for it to carry on. So he did the only thing he could. He helped her get her own business running, and then kissed her goodbye. Lin was always going to be too proud to admit how much it broke her heart, but she knew Beylix was where she belonged. Not to mention it was packed up high with enough scrap that she could get lost for weeks rummaging through it all for working parts. In short, Lin loved it, but couldn't help but feel the loss with Logan going off to Osiris.
The woman picked herself up and carried on. It wasn't long before she met up with a familiar face-- a blast from the past-- the remainder of the family Petrova. News of their loss-- namely her old friend Suvi-- was just as troubling and upsetting. Instead, Lin tried to focus on the fact the elder Kasimir was quite the mechanic now. There was always a need for another hand around her workshop, and Lin was quick to convince him to come work for her. It was possible they found a little solace in their new-found friendship-- honouring and remembering sweet little Suvi's memory together. Lin never pried any deeper for details, of course, and more or less respected Kasimir's love for his family.
This wasn't all that came about on Beylix, oh no. With the release of the Signal? Every die-hard Independent got stirred up, especially when the Alliance aimed to deny the accusation. That it was false propaganda. Lin didn't know what to think, but a rebellion had already started up on Beylix, and well, she fell into it. Hard not to, when the place felt so much like home to her now. She got by being a prime source of supplies for the rebels, and even got so drawn into their cause that she built a small safehouse underneath her scrapyard. Her codename amongst them has been coined as Daiyu to help protect her identity and the discovery of her ties. So far? The Feds are none the wiser, and she aims to keep it that way. Her business has been a little strained as of late, and she had to branch out with her contacts. Sadly, this meant her falling in with some bad folks, just to get the supplies the rebels sorely needed. The Black Mamba being one of them-- with future promises that she'll send what things Lin may need in exchange for her mehcanical skills.
Lin was going to do anything to see Beylix defended.

Roleplay Example -
The sound of worn keys being stroked lightly filled the large workshop, scrap and parts, pieces of hull along the walls. The light tune bounced off it all in a rather slow fashion. It was only a half-arsed, one-handed play, one elbow leaning on the lip at the far end as the grease-smudged redhead rested her chin in her palm. Eyes stared passed the old parchments of music notes, a little dazed and glazed as her mind drifted away into a day-dream. Maybe she was trying to imagine she was elsewhere, or someone else? Not at the juncture she happened to be stuck. There were pieces of a sign being made still behind her on one of the workshop tables. All different materials and some bent parts all looking to be constructed into something that said Hawkins' Bazaar.
"See you found the piano just fine." The voice was a poor attempt at sounding uplifting, but the underlying sadness was there.
Lin blinked away the mist from her eyes, and woke up from her musings to peer over her shoulder. There she saw Logan, one hand in his pocket, the other toying with the loose letters of the sign. He was staring a little distantly at them. Lin didn't dare move. As if it'd set everything in motion and things would go too fast. She kept her silence for as long as she could, but he eventually peered up at her. A weak, wan smile appearing on his face. It didn't hide a thing.
"Well? Do you hate it?"
It almost made her angry that he'd even asked, that he'd assume her ungrateful for all of this. She pushed up from the piano, let the cover clank down over the keys. The sound echoed around them as she crossed to the opposite side of the workbench.
"Of course I don't. But... is this really what you want?"
Logan gave a rather regretful sigh, placed his hand over hers, and didn't look up for the longest moment. And then just started talking, "I can't stay here, Lin. This place isn't me."
"You wanna be the hero, you wanna bring justice to the bad. I know, Logan. I remember the speech." A slight roll of sarcasm from her tongue, but she was just upset with the whole thing, and decided to be angry instead of crying.
"Oh. So I guess you're the only one to follow your dreams?" He teased; he knew how to handle her slight anger. He knew her all too well. Growing up together does that.
Lin's face darkened a little, annoyed. "You know I didn't mean it like that. I just..."
She didn't know what to say, really. That was just it. There was no way to work this out. There was no way they'd both be happy. They'd grown up together, and yet they were always in two different worlds. This conversation had been going on for a few days, and really, finally, it was at it's end. Lin had dragged it out as long as she could, just to try and make him stick around a little longer, but it really had just made things worse.
"Goodbye Lin-Lin."
