Alright, so the thread has already been started here and looks alright, but I wanted to get some discussion going before we dive in there. We already had the idea for a gun shopping thread which we've been putting off for ages. This could now be that thread. We'd have to word Des' current situation a bit to make it fit though. Roger et al. go to see an arms dealer they met during the earlier shootout and that's about as far as we got lol. We could have Des be a smith who is affiliated with the dealer. So they go to see him, blah blah blah, and then he directs them to "his guy" who is "the best". Then we walk into the thread you just started up. Sound good for everyone? Des is an associate of arms dealer Ru Jiang. Okay, next point. How do we go from buying guns from him to hiring him onto the crew? I can guarantee you there isn't going to be a "You're a pretty good smith, how about you join us" moment. If Roger were to do the inviting then they'd need to see Des's skills also as a shooter and of course the big one, as a mechanic (the job he's actually getting hired for). More likely though would be that Des asks to join. He's tired of sitting around planet side or whatever and wants to get back on a ship or something. Ru Jiang (the arms dealer) mentions something about these guys being badass in that shootout earlier which peaks Des's interests. He asks Roger who gives him a "no offense but I don't know you" answer. Then Des counters talking about his skill as a mechanic too. Now we could have him hired on the spot after that but again I think that's out of character. I think Roger should deny him a second time. They leave with the guns and Roger sends a message to Onas and gets a dossier on Des a few hours later. Roger reads it, talks to Ru Jiang a bit, and then sends a message to Des that he's got the job if he wants it. Sound good?

If he's a supplier for the arms dealer, wouldn't it be kind of---counter-productive for him to be instrumental in getting rid of a good supplier? Somehow I thought there would be an altercation of some sort between the two (although I'm not sure what the personality of the NPC is), and at some point it coming to finding out that Des was the more skilled of the two anyway. Kind of like a Kaylee vs. the original mechanic for Serenity's mechanic position, except without the---we'll call it nuances of how Kaylee knew the original mechanic.

Well as I understand it, the arms dealer is not a smith. The dealer is the business man who has all the connections. Desmond is the guy who knows guns inside and out. The two jobs are related but not identical. The dealer is the middleman not some less impressive alternative.
Also keep in mind that although Desmond's main profession is gunsmith, we're hiring him as a mechanic. Whatever else he may be is secondary to that job.
Even after we pick Desmond up, we're still going to have the dealer as a contact on Beau and potentially a source for resupply. Desmond might be able to craft a custom weapon in his down time on the ship but he's not going to be able to get us bulk shipments of ammunition or place an order for high ordinance weapons if he's in the engine room of the Peerless. We can't dump our first contact for Desmond if in a few minutes Desmond is going to leave the arms dealing business for a place on our ship. Now we don't have any arms dealer contact because we burnt the first bridge and re-purposed the second.

Per Des:
I'm at work, post up for Rog that I like he idea. As for the altercation between the two, we can work something out for it for sure if we need too. For the most part, illegal gunsmiths are freelance and take jobs as they come up. (At least in my understanding). I'd post it all up myself but my phone and proboards don't mesh very well

I like this in its simple form, but the idea of the gunsmith(des) and the dealer(Ru Jiang) coming into some kind of rivalry needs to be dropped here and now. We don't want our future mechanic/gunsmith/rebel-general/tomb-raider to be on the bad side of our gun dealer.
The obvious choice here is to side step the first in favor of a second npc for gun deals. But. I like Ru Jiang already, and am happy to keep cultivating stories for him.(I already have three missions this guy will give us when you want them Roger)
That said, this is Beaumonde, and just like Persephone, it's a gateway planet, and at the halfway point of tech-vs-hardlife. They have an all-powerful gang just like Seph does. This is a gimme. So an so bad gangbanger #26 doesn't like Ru Jiang and Des, and has made problems for them.
Or
Des always knew this wasn't his job. Him and Ru Jiang go way back, from that time with the thing, and Ru Jiang would never forget such a favor, and was just helping Des out with this job. Obviously Des hates pushing crate after crate of the SAME DAMN GUN around.
"I mean COME ON! I'm Desmond MILEs... uh uh, Matheson. I dont sell hundreds of the same damn gun. wheres the fun in this?"
"We sell guns in bulk Matheson, guys like today, are an anomaly. If you want steady work making your own brand, your gonna have to start a company."
"yeah that'll happen"
"Miracles happen everyday, like meeting these people today."
"What makes you think these two will buy tons of guns, maybe they need something more personal"
and blablabla. the point is, that its a self inflicted decision. Also, why are we buying entire crates of stuff? we only have a few guys.
Speaking of guns, Roger, we should go with the C4 storm, and the P4 storm, and use interchangeable mags and ammo. For the crew and boarding. Not for missions. Just my two cents. So when we do run this thread, thats what is in the crates.
And if we run the Ru story right, he could actually suggest the hiring to you at the site, and later, roger can get the intel on him form onas, and send for him. ok, this took too long with all the chatbox and youtube interruptions, im posting and im very sure this seems scatterbrained.

I'll wait for Des' input on how he gets to work with Ru Jiang. As for the rest, yeah I'm pretty set on doing some homework and hiring Desmond after this thread. And if I understand our bulk purchase, you mean it's the kind of situation where shit has already hit the fan and is now splattered everywhere. Somebody is just tossing out guns to every man, woman, and child as they run past to get into position to fight. This isn't going out on missions because everyone has their own personal guns and styles (and Des might individually work to customize their loadouts down the road).
Question: How big is our damn crew?! With the crew filling up I don't see us as having more than two or three NPCs. Who would actually need a gun thrown to them? Most crew would have a pistol on them and would much prefer to grab their nearby rifle, shotgun, submachinegun, etc. instead of some standard issue piece. Interchangable ammunition is nice, but think of where we're fighting. If this happens we're in the ship, right? That mean's we're sitting on top of our ammo dump already. Maybe Vitale can't toss Roger a spare mag, but if we're getting hit so bad that we're running out of ammo then you can fall back into the next room and grab some more. Right?
Also, as much as I like the look of the Cx4 it is only chambered for pistols. If we do choose it I would prefer it fire a rifle cartridge (even if we lose the interchangeability with the pistols).
